axle problems? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #27538 9 posts Started by Sheazy0219
I have a queestion to ask for a friend. He has a 5th gen celly. The drivers side boot is torn in two and looks like it might be leaking out the grease, and of course we know it is letting crap in that shouldn't be in there. If today is the first day it started making any noise, and just started acting up on him....how long before it is undrivable, and how much to replace? Would this be the cause of a loud clanking noise in reverse?

Thanks for any help.
I'd replace it asap. No sense in driving on something that is going to get worse, and possibly screw up other things. It could last 5 miles, it could last 500? I'm not sure how much a new shaft wil lcost, but probably figure around 100 bucks I'd guess?

well, mine has been clacking away since last octoberish... was told in may of 04 that the boots were cracked... Havent gotten it fixed yet (let the flames begin)... it just sounds like dice when i make turns. Im already aware its axle replacing time, but the cost >confused.gif> ... started with the right side, and eventually went to the left...

thanks for the info guys. I dont suppose anyone is in the DFW area and could help out my friend with this. He has the cash to get the parts but wouldn't have enough to pay for an install....anyone feeling generous, or wanna give me a step by step so I can try to do it and help him out?
Um, the install should be pretty easy. Take off the wheels, and parts of the suspenension, pull the axles, put new ones in, put back together? It should be pretty similar to the 6th gen I'd think, and with all the times i've had to pull my motor I've gotten pretty good at it >tongue.gif>

yea replacing an axel is easy stuff, once you know what to do. download the BGB from celicatech and get a new axel @ whatever autoparts store is near you. use your old axel for refrence to insure they give you the right one.
they normally run around 70-80$ >smile.gif>

As stated, thanks for all the helpful info. It's a good thing I cleared a lil space in the garage so we have more room to work. HA! fun stuff!
