Manny (presure2) and I put in an oil cooler today. I know it is close to useless on an n/a engine but we had nothing better to do in the 95 degree heat.



my reasons why...

1 the 5s/3s have them stock (water to oil), and the euro STs have them stock (air to oil), so why not do it to mine.
2 oil is the life blood of the engine, I want to take care of it.
3 if/when I do decide to swap (probably Silvertop) it will be a nice add on.

i would look into getting an oil temp gauge in the future to see how well the cooler is working >>

Thats a very good upgrade dude and its good for you that you care about your engine.In Cyprus it is very hot especially during the summertime which the temp can hit 43 degrees and if you push the car even on night time you can see you oil temp meter moving like the boost meter to 110c degrees!!!!!

on summer track days i've allready reached 130°C oil temp... for a short time but i've seen it... >>

so oil cooler is really important... >>

It really wasn't too hard to install, it was just difficult for me to figure out which parts/fittings to get (major thanks to Manny for helping me pick out the right parts). We went with 1/2 inch fittings/hoses but probably could of done 3/8 instead.

All together it was about $175ish + a new (larger) oil filter. I can put together a parts list later.

nice price on that, yeah im gonna put one in my seventh gen, it puts out so much heat in lift its pretty easy to get the 2zzge to overheat on hot days.

Man we dont have track here >> >> YET!!!!!
I am not pushing my car especially in summertime!!!For me above 110c its scary beacuse here is CYPRUS!!!Hahahahaha
But yes Oilcooler its necessary and thanks Batman722 for remind this to us.

Beware fitting oil coolers 'just because you think you need one'. Firest step would be to monitor oil temp. If the temp is too high, then consider using a high quality oil and then a cooler. If you do fit a cooler, then I'd recommend a waxstat too. It may be hot now, but in the winter, the oil will take much longer to heat up and may not even reach its optimum operating temp.

waxstat, what is that? I know what it does, but i'm curious how if it's diff from Thermo.
also, how's the oil sandwich adapter work?

steve, i mean below 180 degrees F , it restricts oil flow to the cooler so the car warms up as normal.
the oil sandwich just goes between the block and your oil filter, like a "sandwich", with inlet and outlet ports.

There was talk on mr2oc about having a external oil cooler to help keep things kewl...but some of the wiser members seem to say it's pointless and the stock one does a good enough job.

i was just curious about the sandwich adapter because of all they're talk about using some kind of stat/valve to open after a certrain temp to hit both coolers. they didn't go into great detail about it

If I already have an oil filter relocation kit on my car is the sandwich that I need for the oil cooler a different and have to switch mine out? and if you know by any chance where/if I can get one for -10an oil lines?

ok if you do not have the relocation kit, then the adapter would go on between the filter and the block. If you do have a relocation kit, then it would still have to go between the filter and the relocation kit.

you would still want the oil to go to the filter durring cold start conditions, then when the oil reaches the 180 degrees, the valve would open and circulate the oil cooler oil through the system (cooling the oil).

or you could run the adapter at the block, then you wouldn't be filtering your oil until the valve opens and reaches 180.
