Drums on the GT - 6G Celicas Forums

To all the US GT owners. Do you people ever have to change your drum brakes?
the GTs come with all 4 disk brakes. the STs come with the rear drums.

what? Gt with drums. Perhaps you bought a car that was slapped with GT on it.
If it don't have a moonfoof, S-series engine and OEM style sturt bars in the engine bay. Then you deff. have an ST.(period)
What does the ebrake use? I know for sure it aint the rear pads.

I'll take some pics tomorrow of my GT. Yes, it is a GT and it does have 4 wheel disc brakes. But it also has, what looks to me, drum brakes. Now, if its called something else please do let me know. They just look like drums to me.

Well its 4 wheel disc, but also yes does have "mini" drums.. or what not for the parking brake.
The ST204 parking brake does indeed use a drum-based braking system. Notice how the rear rotor on your guys' GTs is so big in the middle? That's because the inside of it is like a drum. It makes contact with shoes internally when the e-brake is engaged.

I believe I read somewhere that only the dealer carries shoes for the rear e-brake assembly, and they cost around $80. I dunno how correct that is though.

your right. your local chain store would not carry them.

But you can send them in to get rebuilt. (they add more brake material)
the shoes are prolly 20$ ea for each shoe.
both sides tend to not wear evenly, so you may wanna check them and just get the ones that you need.

Are you serious? Damn, that sucks. Cause I really need to change mine. The ebrake doesn't hold anymore. All the parts stores has the GT and ST shoes listed as the same. Thats what they tell me. I guess I'll have to try it anyways and see what happens. It it doesn't work then I'll have to take it to the Toyota dealer.
Ohh.. And I didn't take any pics. Today just didn't look like a nice day and with the mist. I didn't really wanna sit there and get wet slowly while the wind was blowing. Its a little chilli out.

No. You can't just adjust it. If your shoes are worn out your brakes won't work. Just like your pads. If they wear out they don't work. Then you risk damaging your disc's and your calipers.

My ebrake only holds on small inclines. It'll roll in steeper hills.
Only the dealer carries the shoes. In canada they go for $35 a shoe. Thats $70 each side. You should never have to change these, if you do you might have a sticky ebrake cable.
Poke, you'll note the dual nature of my query: condition of the friction material (aka are the shoes worn out) or correction of the position. I thought it was obvious enough not to specify that adjusting would only apply to shoes with sufficient material left.
You can adjust the ebrake cable. GT's have disk brakes on all 4 ends. Yes the ebrake uses the insides of the disks...
id be surprised if those thing wear out before 200,000km.... er 130,000 miles.

unless you drive with your e-brake on.
Ok yeah. They weren't worn out. My bad. They sure looked like it though. Dealer says thats how they look like. Would've cost me $30 per shoes. And the brand new ones barely have any of that stuff on them. Thats why parts stores don't carry them. Its pointless. So yeah. Everything works find now. It did need adjusting. I was stubborn and ignorant. I admit it. Shouldn't have called them drums either. They're not real drum brakes.
