grinding - 6G Celicas Forums

recently i discovered that everytime i try to speed shift into 3rd gear i get a horrible grind does anyone know anythiong about that >confused.gif>
How is your clutch? Is it working well. It could use some adjustment on the pedal. If that's not the issue, then move to changing the tranny fluid. If that still doesn't fix it, you need a new transmition one of these days. Just keep off it a bit, don't try to shift so fast. You can kind of wiggal the shifter a little and that usually helps it go into gear. Either way, there's no need in ramming the gears.

by speed shifting do you mean shifting without the clutch? keep in mind the tranny isnt made to actually do that so grinding is not normal.

i recently replace the clutch and got the flywheel resurfaced and what i mean by speed shifting is using the clutch just going into 3rd gaer fast at high rpms
You need new syncros most likely. is it only 3rd gear?
I had a little grinding going into 2nd, try changing your tranny fluid

how to is here

yeah its only 3rd gear and i changed my trans fluid should i use the penzoil fluid that you used
I got the same problem too. But for me its mostly second gear, and 3rd occasionaly. My fluid is fine(got it changed soon after buyin the car). I think my clutch is on its way out. It slips occasionaly if i push the clutch down hard and fast. Like if im crusing through the gears trying to get onto the highway, it misses sometimes, and i have my foot fully on the floor.
I have the exact same problem, third is the worst for me. Second there is a little vibrating feeling and fourth is starting to show some as well. I just had my clutch replaced and the gear oil along with it. So I know it’s not those. I'm goin to agree with Junior and say it’s our syncros.
All I can say is take it easy on the gears.
I first used Mobil1 synthetic gear oil and I still grinded. Once I used the syncromesh, it stopped. Changing it is easy and the cost is only about $25. It is worth a try guys

heh, i've had the same problem since i bought the car. the guy who owned the car before me put a stage 1 clutch in 2 months before i bought it, so i know it's not that, i changed the tranny fluid 2 months ago approximately, still grinds into third, i can have my foot fully on the floor, shifting FREAKING slow at like, 2500rpm's, and it'll still grind. but when it's that bad, it's only my first drive of the day, or after it's been sitting for a while. even if it's warm out and i haven't driven it for a long time, it'll grind. i dunno.. probly synchro's, i know my clutch & fluid is fine... so yeah! my transmission also makes a stupid noise when my rpm's are anywhere from 2300-2700.... sounds like loose bearings... but it's so much work if you do it yourself, and it's so expensive to get it fixed, i got a mechanic to listen to it, he said it wasn't a huge issue and wasn't worth getting fixed because of the cost, so i'm just putting up with it, but it's very annoying.

I've got syncromesh in as well. It's not what the Celica calls for though. It calls for some kind of special Toyota oil. Syncromesh does okay by me though.

my car is fine but going into third when coming out of 2nd the third gear has this slipping feel in the shifter as it goes in yet there no grinding or actual slipping of rpm, its just the shifter kinda flops over some bump or something and then into 3rd...also if i shift from 1st to second moving my hand VERY VERY VERY VERY slowly it grind in between 1st and second with clutch down thats only when i shift slowly what the hell is up with that?
try double clutching.. that should give you a good idea if its your syncro's..
yea i have the same problem but only when i downshift into 3rd..its a horrible grinding sound and it drives me nuts..its more than likely the synchro
ive double clutched as is passed through neutral to rev and match before shifting no change in the feel
my friends si grinds terribly after 5000rpms, and he had to replace his 3rd-4th gear synchronizer.

It's not just about getting from point A to point B anymore....
