I've never, ever had ABS do that. Sounds like it's faulty, but as you say, there should be a code.....
ABS usually fails off. That is, if it detects a fault it disables itself and gives you normal brakes....

correct. the ABS is not part of your ECU CELs. The ABS has it's own ABS ECU and if there is a prob with the system (sensor or whatever) it shuts the system down and you have normal braking ability and the ABS light will remain illuminated. You can then read the ABS codes
for reference...(from Manny)
94-95
ignition in the ON position,
bridge E1 & TC in the diagnostics box, just like checking codes, read the code from the ABS light
codes 31-34 are the sensors @ each wheel.
31 Malfunction of right front wheel speed sensor signal. Check
speed sensor, sensor rotor, wiring harness and connector
32 Malfunction of left front wheel speed sensor signal. Check
speed sensor, sensor rotor, wiring harness and connector
33 Malfunction of right rear wheel speed sensor signal. Check
speed sensor, sensor rotor, wiring harness and connector
34 Malfunction of left rear wheel speed sensor signal. Check
speed sensor, sensor rotor, wiring harness, and connector
if you do not have a 94-95 you can go to Autozone or Pep Boys and they can check the code for free I believe.
