MPG??? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #30100 27 posts Started by chicklover345
i was wondering what rpms you guys shift at, and what rpms you cruise at to get the best mpg and what mpg do you get. i get from 19-21 average, i dont always drive like a grandma though.

My car = 0-60 in ~9secIt's slow, I know
I use to drive like an ass, shift around 4k, and speed a lot.. Got around 26mpg.. Then as gas prices started going up, I started driving slower and shifting around 2500-3.. ended up getting like 32.. so now just driving normal as inbetween, Im getting around 29-30. But I also have an ST with 147k.
Well i don't know what i get in town but with my gt i drove a little jot and got around 32 mpg not to bad. But gas prices went up so ive been driving slower then ever. heh
well, i shift around 2500-2800, and i drive 45 in 4th goin steady in town, and i live about 15 miles away from the city, and i can go 2 weeks before i have to fill up again. If you can keep ur rpms steady around 2700-3000, you will get excellent gas mileage. If i lived in town, i wouldnt have to fill up for almost 4 weeks, i guarantee it.

It's not just about getting from point A to point B anymore....
With my "Manu-Matic" style tranny and torque converter I can control where it shifts without harm, so I guess I can actually respond even though my engine is toast lol. I averaged like 26 when driving it semi-hard and like 31 when driving it really nice like. I do a lot of highway miles though.

I drive hard everywhere. I rarely shift below 4500 rpms
I don't understand how you get better mileage if you drive at highway speeds, because when I drive on the highway I'm at ~3500-4000 RPM in 5th. When I'm driving local streets I'm usually around ~2000-3000 RPM and I'm not working the engine as hard, but I'm getting lower gas mileage?

Easy concept. Starting and Stopping in the city causes your car to become inefficient. Thats why hybrids shut their engines off at stop lights and start up when you take your foot off the brake. When your on the highway getting good gas mileage...your not starting or stopping, just pure going forward engine use.
Ahhh... All makes sense now, thanks.

Anyways 22-23 mpg is good enough for me, although I would like be like you ST guys and get crazy 32 mpg.
I get around 30-35 MPG on my 4age swap.
But thats only when Im really cheerishing it.
The thing is the engine gives off a nasty jerk forward when I go past 3K RPM and then shift. This happens around 1-3 gear. It also happens when I tap the gas pedal really quick and then hold it down. The car really flies forward! Tottaly different from the 7a engine. Then again this engine is only a Premium eater. Dam my pennies are all drained now....................... >rolleyes.gif>
I got a auto that shifts around 2.8-3.4k driving regually. I get around 30-32mpg.

If im not wrong, toyotas are made to get better speed and mpg on highways and at higher speeds.

My Auto shifts into 5th gear on the highway exactly at 80mph, and I have a high RPM around 4k.
hmmm..normal aka "babying the car" aka "not going into boost" driving i get a pretty decent 22-24 (i think?) mpg. i shift around 3-3.5k normally. aggressive driving going into boost i shift around 4.5-5k and its time for me to head over to the gas station! >biggrin.gif>

i dont get why you guys get so good gas mileage. is keeping the rpms as low as possible not the best way, ie 35mph in 5th at like 2300rpm?

My car = 0-60 in ~9secIt's slow, I know
26.7 mpg on my last fill up on the 3SGTE at 10psi, a mix of highway and city driving. Shifting depending on how I felt... Sometimes, at 6k others, at 3k... ashley knows.

If anyone needs interior stuff, etc, I'm parting whats left of my celi out. Just ask.

Yah, thats how Im gonna do mine from now on. I'll shift at every 2K RPM!
35-40mpg, ST 100k

25% on it

I am a thief.do not buy anything from me.
hahhh you guys are lucky. i shift nice, never speed... and i get like 16-17mpg in town >frown.gif>.
i shift every 2000rpm...yeah short...people get piss cause i go slow...but i save a lot of gas...and i dont kare...i luv my celica...
Dont care what gas milage I get, no short shifting and poncing about, dont concentrate on what RPM`s I shift....why???? shift when you feel your car needs to change gear thats it. Cars are meant to be driven, have fun and enjoy your car...after all thats why we are car enthusiasts. If you wanna conserve fuel, buy a little baby honda or something that drives forever on a teaspoon of fuel and would lull you to sleep in a thunder storm. I`d rather get out of my car with a smile on my face than worrying about how much fuel I just saved driving like miss daisy.
last time i calculated my mpg it was 17.5 in city >frown.gif> damn

actually im not sure and i could be wrong but i find that shifting at 3-3.5k rpm is optimal in terms of fuel economy. just from my experience and understanding, the engine works harder to gain speed with a higher gear on a lower speed that was meant for a lower gear. im not sure if im explaining it right and not sure if this applies to NA motors, but this is how my 3S is. if i dont wunna go into boost, i keep it cruising/shift anywhere from 3-3.5k rpm and i wont burn so much gas.

its all about speed, the right gear for that speed, and load on the car. i dunno...i could be wrong...lol >tongue.gif>

I get about 28mpg in my GT, consistently. I have a K&N drop-in and I shift around 3k regularly, and about 80% of my driving is highway. I also keep the car empty of cargo, no dead weight =].

That's only half-true. IF you are going at a constant speed (no accelerating, no hills) then YES, it is good to be in a gear like 4th or 5th. But if you are accelerating and you shift at that low of an rpm, your engine will bog down and that uses more gas then someone accelerating and shifting around 3k-4k. Just like riding a bicycle, if you are going about 5mph and then try to accelerate in a gear like 4th or 5th, it's gonna be a lot more stressful on you then if you went through gears normally. Just about the same concept.

Celica's are pretty good stable about gas mileage, I seem to get pretty much the same mpg when I beat on it, as when I baby it.

on the freeway usualy about 3.5-4 but I only have to shift when I get one, then its just straight driving (I rarely brake 70) around town its usualy 2-2.5, and around the hood its around 1.5-2 its. my average is right about 27 mpg (I use only premium fuel) and I'm known to take off faster then nessisary.
"Cars are meant to be driven".. sansei shimas..

being able to shift at whatever rpm i want to is one of the reasons why i love manual.
just as long as i get 20+ mpg, thats good enough for me.

things happen for a reason.
