My catalytic converter is "falling apart" - 6G Celicas Forums

alrite, not too long ago i picked up an eastern high flow cat,
a resonator, and a muffler. i had meineke bend me some
2.5" pipes and it was great. 2 days ago, i realized that as
soon as i go over 2k rpm's, theres a really nasty rattling
sound. after bringing it back to meineke, i was told my cat
was starting to fall apart inside and that it will only get worse.
obviously i need to change it, but should i get another high
flow, and also would it be worth having them also change
my muffler while doing the work so i can upgrade to magnaflow?
High flow is a bit of a misnomer these days -- modern TWC cats are all relatively free flowing.

If you like MagnaFlow, their parent company Car Sound makes catalytic converters, both the universal and pre-flanged types that will fit the 7AFE. Fairly cheap too, for all the quality construction. Try hottexhaust.com or fle-online.com and you'll find the best prices. The prices I found on line for my exhaust parts (got derailed by Toyota screwing up a diagnosis of my suspension) were lower than the prices my exhaust shop's wholesaler paid to get his parts.

How much should a magnaflow 2.25 hi flow cat cost?
there ranged anywhere from $75-$250 depending on where you get it and what type you get.

Strate pipe is a lot more cost effective. Just pull a plug wire if they ever check you for emisions. It's just that easy. >wink.gif>

I'm catless, and I don't have flames that I'm aware off. If I put a spark plug in my muffler and hooked a coil up to it, I might get some action. Got to run rich too, which means bigger injectors.

catless is retarded...not only are you helping to destroy the enviroment it serves NO PURPOSE......the cats of today don't effect flow really, and if your that worried about it on your 100 hp celica then get a high flow cat that reduces emissions and gives you "improved" flow

It's a 4 cylinder, it can't put out that much polutent. Besides that, I good high flow cat costs money. Do you know how much a piece of strate pipe costs to replace it? About $8, plus the price of clamps. Unless it in the manifold, then you just gut it. Every little gain you can get helps. So yeah, I'm not taking back my desition to remove the cat on my 135hp Celica.

and a cat won't gain you any horsepower really
and yes i know exactly how much it all cost you can get a cat rather cheap and have it replaced for under 100$

oh and no cat means you won't pass inspection

And if you understood exhaust flow, you'd know that gutting a cat impairs flow.

As for the suggestion that four-cylinder engines can't put out much pollution -- boy, can I tell you never took a logic course. Think about it, every drop of gasoline you put in your car comes out as pollution. Every single drop.

Me, I like the idea of still being able to see the mountains in fifty years, and not have to worry about wading through a brown haze of ground-level ozone and acid rain. The air's already bad enough when you get a temperature inversion. Why add to it, when you get no effective gain.

Or to put it more simply, before you take out your cat, empty the change in your ashtray. It'll make about as big a difference.

depending on how efficent ones engine is, catalyic converters do little work, all cats do is burn unburned fuel coming out of the engine. on a fuel efficent vehicle like a 4cyl that doesnt require alott of gas, unlike a ls1 or your common v6 it realeases fewer pollutants. compared to all the f-bodys, and domestic cars, and dump trucks and all the other cars out there i dont think removing a cat out of a 2.2 litre ECONOMY engine will do much. unless hes running 103 octane..... but then again if all of us celica owners keep removing the cats all the mountains will be gone in 50 years. >rolleyes.gif>
