Do you guys inform your insurance company when you swapped your engine? If so how much increase did it go up by?
Engine Swap - 6G Celicas Forums
Ok well theres the deal - ur insurance will go up, most likely. If u dont tell them, ur engine isnt insured, and all the money and work u put into it goes out the window.

Some insurance companies may be scared to insure you...I didn't tell them...If I wreck my car...it's not going to cover it anyway.
I talked with my insurance guy about insuring upgrades. He said with an engine swap, you might want to let them know, and for sure keep reciepts of how much you paid, etc. He said he usually won't up the insurance, just because the class of the car is still the same or something.

well this is quite an arguement...turbo cars usually cost more than non turbo but according to your vin its still a non turboed car. and from what i know that is what insurance goes by. not color not anything else. just the vin and your driving record.
so technically they can not raise your insurance to make you pay for a car that you dont have or cant even buy in the U.S.
thats my take on things.

Yah they go by VIN...and with that in mind...they aren't going to insure something for more than what it's worth correct?

VIN number yes, but a turbocharger does in fact jack up the rates. Call and get a quote for a Impreza RS and an Impreza WRX. You'll notice the difference because of the turbo. I imagine if you said you were swapping in another engine that didn't have a turbo (3sge) they wouldn't be as harsh to you. I shall see when I do it this week.
my friend got a wrx and his insurance actually got cheaper than it was on his 95 gs eclipse with minor mods...his insurance company considered the WRX more of a family car since it was 4 doors and AWD so he was only paying 99 bucks a month for full coverage on it and was pain like 150 a month on the eclipse
No.
Okay guys I just talked to my insurance broker and she told me that if I swapped my engine they would not insure me at all. She told me that the engine has to be made for the vehicle. However you guys are correct about they only charge you by the VIN to determine what type of vehicle it is but remember if you don't tell them things you won't be insured in the end... If I still do it and not tell them if I get into any accident I would be fully liable. (Shiet) So now what guys? I talked to this dude that said he can do the 3SGTE 4th generation motor conversion for me for 6-7 thousand Canadian which is pretty cheap to me. Man I want to do it but I don't wanna get screwed in the end one day.

Thats incorrect, you get higher insurance for being a boy, u get higher insurance for having a red car also.

Supersprynt is correct on the color. Color does matter for your insurance. With a red car you will pay more than if you had a black or silver. Although, when you get a custom color, lets say a Supra Orange, does that change your insurance or is it just based upon red?
I imagine that if you told them you were getting a custom color, you're up to no good >

I heard you do not have to tell them at all, but the engine will not be insured. you would most likely be able to pull the engine out but you would need to replace the original engine (who wants to keep an old engine lieing around...) another thing is you could just buy your damaged car back from the insurance company. Also as long as you do not lie if they ask you a question your car is insured, with an engine swap, nitrous, whatever... just if they ask you need to tell the truth, but dont reveal more then you have to.

don't know about other states, but here in louisiana, insurance doesn't go by color. I talked to my friend's dad thats an insurance salesman and he says its not true. It's power of car, theft rate, and how much it cost to repair. Toyota has high theft rate and parts are expensive thats y we are charged more than a ford.
yea to disappoint you all but insurance does not go by color.
anyone who disagrees my sister (state farm agent) can call you and tell you otherwise.
and yea i do admit
it goes by your ssn..vin..
thats it.

Telling your insurance company that you have just installed a turbo engine (most likely from japan) is like telling an officer you have a loaded gun in your glove department, You may get off easier in the long run if he checks the glove departmen but what are the chances hes going to check it without any reason? thats sorta how I see insurance and engine swapping.
I didn't tell my insurance shiznit.
I'm not telling my insurance company.. They don't even look anyways. An insurance adjuster who knows engines doesn't usually come and inspect the damage... and so what if your engine isn't covered. In the majority of accidents your engine comes out fine anyways. If your block gets crushed, then most likely you aren't living and don't care anymore anyways...

From where I'm from (Toronto Canada) if you lie or don't tell your insurance company of major mods they have the right to not insure you when the time comes. If I hit a pull or hit something by accident which hopefully will never happen they will not cover my damages. Hitting a pole down can cost up to $50,000. My friend was drink and he hit the pole down. Damage was about $55,00 but his insurance company paid for it. Now if he had a different engine he would be ****ed.
