Hi, I redid my wheels recently too. I had a slightly different approach. You can see how I did it towards the end of the page here:

Here's some photos of my wheels

Basically they are sanded smooth with an orbital sander, then sanded with 400 then 600 grade sand paper, then polished, cleaned, grey bits painted, and all painted with clearcoat to protect against corrosion.
