I just picked up a 10 gal starter kit. I wanted to know if it's safe to add my tap water, add the fish, and with the fish add the conditioner? Or if there's anything else I should do beforehand.

What are some good beginner fish that ARENT boring goldfish?

haha i was bored and gave this **** a try once... golden girami (check the spelling) scissor tails, tiger barbs (get babies otherwise they eat the rest of the tank). if you run tap water put some baking soda in or us a PH kit cause tap has things that keep it clean that are bad for the fish. then run the tank for a day with the filter setup then add fish the next day. also try and keep the tank room temp so the fish are in shock when they hit the new water..... OK now theres ur question dont bring it up nemore i feel like a nerd already. lol jk but really dont ask.

I've had fish for a while in a fresh water tank. You just half to have water in there a few days before you put fish in. Go to your local pet store, NOT WALMART, and ask them all the questions you have. It really matters what fish you put together. I have a sucker fish and a aderia? or something like that. The Alderia is very agressive and killed all the other fish I've put in there. I talked to the pet store people and they said it was odd that he actually killed fish that were larger than he was. Try to get fish that are "tough" at first too. Once you can take care of them, you can move on to more exotics. Just my advice on the matter.

You could use tap water if you run it for a few days w/o fish, I live on a fresh water well, so when my tanks needed water I just added room-temp tap water and they are all still going strong...4 years later.

I started with some Tetras, 2 angelfish, a sucker/cleaner fish, and some other fish that looks like a mini angelfish (can't remember the name). The angelfish had babies, so they all have their own tank now.

A good fish to start with.... 2 pirhanas (from the same batch).. then when you want to feed them, go buy 5 bucks worth of feeder fish and toss them in the tank. Good times.

Can you put fish in tap water -no ph is too basic

what you do is buy aqua clear brand yellow bottle that has angelfish on it... you add that (says on bottle that it makes water safe for fish).

run it for a couple of hours and put crappy cheap fish there like feeder fish they are like 1 dollar per so many.

next day add fish that you like.

That is not the best way though

If you are shooting for beautiful tropical fish then you have to add all required chemicals, filters etc etc etc run it for at least a week and then introduce them.

just a few numbers..

fish like 78-82 degrees water
fish do not like air bubble things that look cool in store (ie a diver) they get spooked
fish like ph of 6.5 (safe if you mix fish that want it more basic and others more acidic) 6.5 is the best thing. 7 at most(extreme)
fish do not like sharp objects in water for obvious reasons

feed once a day with a pinch of flakes (take a pinch of food grind it in your fingers and release in water. if you overfeed (like they tell you in stores to feed them 3 times per day) they will grow like crazy, your ph will drop like hell etc etc then fish die

keep light on for 8hrs. i keep it on at night then turn it off in the morning

DO NOT place a fishtank near loud things like tv, speakers etc

beginner fish would be guppies, neons, tetras

fish are discriminative. if you get 2 white and 1 red fish, red fish will be under attack. some also pray on each other (ie like angel fish loves neons) and tiger barbs like harrasing angelfish

you MUST have a filter on a 10 gallon tank....just get a water conditioner and put the needed amount in....let it chill for a little bit then set your fish on in its pretty simple and straight forward

u can always get 2 beta fish and put em in the same tank...of course you'll end up with only one or none but it should be entertaining for a minute

It's got 4 neon tetras, 2 red glass barbs, and 2 corydoras, and some snails. The plant behind the black/white rock is a real plant, the others are fake. I plan on adding a cave of some sort because its funny, the two barbs always are in the two holes in the rock. The tetras stick together and are pretty spazzy.

My water is kind of clouded right now but my friend told me it would clear up in a bit. I washed the stones, and let the water be conditioned for about 12 hours before adding fish. They are cheapies but I love em, really soothing. The temperature is usually around 73 degrees F. Thoughts?

3 fish died lol

Three neon tetras have been sucked into the stick part that filters the water, their tails get stuck and i wake up and they're dead heh.

I got piranhas.

You should cycle the tank first. Add hearty fish like goldfish in order to add ammonia so that bacteria can grow and feed off of it. The bacteria in combination with mechanical filtration (filter) and chemical filtration (carbon) will keep your tank healthy.

your tank is too cold man, turn up the heat! Also, make sure you change some of your water after a bit. Get a syphon hose cleaner too, or your fish will die later on. Make sure to keep up on that maintenance. Snag one of those sucker fishes too. Maybe a snail also. They keep your tank cleaner.

I just started a saltwater tank. So far I have hermit crabs and snails. woohoo!
