Custom Exhaust - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #32439 9 posts Started by Davesceli
Ive heard that celicas have more than one cat, GTs have three, at the manifold and at the rear.
i was thinking of making up a custom exhaust where i had a straight pipe from the manifold down to a new hi flow cat in the rear and so on. Basically going from mulitple cats to just one.

would this work or should i just stick with a cat-back?

Would it affect smog?

Does it matter that my car is an OBD-I?

The GT's only have 1 cat, and as far as I know the ST's have one too. Sometimes the resinater is listed as a cat in books, but it's not. If you can afford it, and don't care to much about performance, just go with the Greddy cat back. I think it's still for sale somewere. Really hard to find though.

On our GT's theres a cat found inline on the exhaust manifold, and another cat found further down the line after the flex pipe towards the middle of the car. If you get underneath the car, you should see it....its got a metal heat guard above it on the chassis of the vehicle. After the second catalytic converter, theres a stock resonator in line with the pipe also.

Best bet is to either leave the stock secondary cat in place, or have an exhaust shop fit a high-flow cat when they do the piping for emissions purposes. OBD-I or not, when your car is inspected and theres no cats it will probably give you much higher levels of everything they can fail you for. Custom is your best bet if you want to go from the manifold back with your setup without spending an arm and a leg for a brand new catback.

I thought for a second that maybe our car's are different because you have the OBD2 newer car, but then I seen that you have a 94. I only had the manifold cat, that was it. I had the resinater and muffler. But just one cat. I wonder what's going on with that. I have been under my car several times, so if it was there, I would have seen it.

You think someone would bring a car from Cali to Jersy? I thought Cali spec, but that's a long way to ship a car. Oppisite ends of the states.

I've always seen two cats on my cars. First one in Minnesota and second one came from Arizona.
2 Cats on both of mine. One below the manifold and one just past the flex pipe underneath the car.
One is a '95 GT (OBDI) and the other is a '99 GT (OBDII).
Maybe someone took yours out before you got it. Was there any other exhuast work done?
