BOV... Whoosh! Good or bad?? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #32451 23 posts Started by soulshadow
I've heard that highly tuned cars with Turbos do not make that Huge WHOOOSH Sound cause it takes away all that pressure from the engine. But the way I see it, most people with Turbos tend to install that BOV and make that whoosh sound to let other people know that they got turbos. I mean with the BOV its like a leak in the system where the pressure entering the system drops, but at the same time its meant to protect the system from over boosting and damage. The way I see it, Highly tuned cars do not make that Whoosh cause the user adjusts it enough to make high end power, but at the same time with low end waste of that power. What do you guys think?
some cars have recirculating BOV's that dont make as much noise.

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.
a bpv or bov is a must. compressor surge is a ***** and it will kill ur turbo.

Its not a must or else EVERY turbo car would come with one.

They arent a leak in the system, and the sound depends on the BOV and with alot of BOV's the sound is adjustable.

which highly tuned cars are you talking about? like the pro's?
a bov has nothing to do with over boosting or anything silly like that.

its job is the help prevent compressor surge from doing damage to the turbo. it also makes a cool noise that people seem to like.

on a map based car (like a 5sfe) .... you can just vent the bov the the atmosphere and have the cool noises without any drawbacks.

on an afm based car (like a 2nd gen 3sgte), when you vent, you loose air that the engine was expecting, and the car can have a crappy throttle response. most 3s owners dont see this as a major problem, and vent the bov anyway, but a proper way to do it would be to recirculate it (but then u loose the sound).

after driving around for a while with the loud hks.... i started to get tired of the loud noise, so i modified the bov so it wouldnt be as loud. now im thinking of going back to the original sound, just because its a good way of telling other ricers out there, whos boss..lol

they do. ok im must say older FI cars use accordion pipes that expand instead of venting.

I've always really liked the SSQV sound - maybe its the fact that it turns heads and does exactly what you say, scares the sh!t outta ricers.

Full on WRC cars don't have a dump valve at all.

Although, with that sort of anti-lag running, compressor surge is the least of the turbos problems.

JDM ST205Blitz Spec NUR Exhaust, somewhere over $1000Needing another one 18000 miles later, bloody annoying.
lol, you answered yourself Mr E tongue.gif

if you plan to put out high HP and not have a BOV wouldn't you need a supertranny, or in an auto's case a super-convertor?
BOV or not, it's nothing to do with the transmission.....

My car (1.8T Jetta) uses a diverter valve, which just diverts (duh) the air back into the intake stream when I let off the throttle. The stock valve and setup doesn't make much noise but now I'm running a Forge 007P piston-type valve (opposed to the stock diaphragm-type) with an AEM CAI and its very very loud. I scare people on the side of the road when I drive by laugh.gif

The point: the whoosh isn't good or bad in itself-- just make sure you do what's right for your car. Some people with 1.8T's use BOV's and end up putting themselves into limp mode or making their cars run like crap since we use a MAF sensor.
forged is nice i was running my ssqv on my 1.8T jetta
but ditch the CAI as it sucks performance wise onthe jetta go for a K&N drop in with a mod'd stock box best performance wise....
diverter vavle on our jettas is the same as the MR2 bypass valve..

oh and bov doesn't make your car run like crap if you set it up right
i hit limp mode 1 or 2 times but its not that big of an issue just need to make sure you setup is right
Eh, many different ways to skin a cat. I'll leave it at that. The CAI was a gift and I'm not ditching it wink.gif Plus it looks nice, and we don't have flooding/standing water problems _at_all_ where I live.
eh free is good...its just restrictive thats all smile.gif well more so then the other options
this aint no jetta forum.... so can we stop talking about the car that starbucks built and start talking about real cars? lol

Yeah, I don't get it either. Lagos, are you okay? biggrin.gif

And by the way, wait until I get my ECU modified by APR and put up some dyno numbers for you wink.gif
go to you local starbucks... youll see everyone pull up in a jetta and order a latte. i have a theory that starbucks builds these cars. i mean farfegnugen sounds like something that would be on their menu.
