It's beautiful out today, so I go out to finish up cleaning up the hatch from the spoiler delete and decided to start pulling the pinstriping.

I've only done the quarter panels so far, and the drivers side went fine. Passenger side though.........not so good. I got all of the pinstripe off, but the problem lies with what's left. A very noticable PAINT RIDGE!!!!! Yes, my clean carfax car has had paint work to the passenger quarter panel. Furthermore, where the paint is (looks to be the entire lower portion of the quarter panel) is a gnats a** darker than the factory paint above!!!! It's barely noticable, someone without as critical as an eye as me might not even notice, but I do, and hate it.

So.......Need to take care of that paint line. What are my odds of using a stepped process of 1200 then 2000 grit sandpaper to wet-sand and then polish the area, or should I just leave that to a professional??

I'll see if I can't get a pic or two to come out.
if it is a line of clearcoat - use 1500, 2000, and to top it off 2500. After this polish the place.

The shading isn't soooooo bad but......no, I think it's bad. Not bad enough to warrant new paint, but that line is enough for me to take it in to have done.
sanding at this point wount help at all..... WHile painting part like this you have to fully overlay it in Clearcoat, not cover half and clearcoat half of it..... Someone did a horible job.....

Well, you guys are helping! tongue.gif

I don't think it's soooo bad. What it looks like to me is that there was some repair work done on the bottom of the 1/4 panel behind the tire. Very good repair work, but the mating to the bumper is what's making me think that (it's not perfect, but very close). So I'm thinking that they just repainted that lower half and masked at the pinstripe.

Sanding, yeah, that would go through the clearcoat. I'm going to talk to a local body shop who I trust tomorrow and see what they think.
Well, talked to the body shop today. It's going to cost about $250 to get fixed due to the repaint/paint match and the fact that there's no start/stop line, making the area to be redone rather large (think entire 1/4 panel, outer edge of roof, and down the A-Pillar).

So.......after talking to him, for about $700 total I'll be able to get the hatch holes filled and the entire hatch resprayed, the 1/4 panel issues above, and the duck tail spoiler done.

So......waiting on the spoiler. biggrin.gif
700? might as well do the whole thing for a couple bucks more, imo
thats kind of what happened to me. The previous owner had some sort of fender bender and crushed the front bumper, so he got a new one in black gelcoat and had them spray clearcoat on it. Looks black when there isn't sun directly on it, but when there is.. You can tell it is almost a brown color.

Not worth it. The paint is essentially immaculate on this thing. It's really 99% flawless. The main meat of that $700 is being taken up with the ducktail spoiler paintjob and the hatch filling/repaint. Now, on the hatch, we're also talking complete disassembly, glass removal, ect, to get the best possible paintjob. No masking lines or anything.
Glad to see some people meticulously take care of their cars. Good call on taking out the glass and everything.

Edit: Are you going to mold the ducktail spoiler? That would be so awesome.

No, I'm getting in on the GB going on right now for them. Once that's on I'm going to decide whether or not to have side extensions added.
I mean Fiberglassing doGGy's ducktail to the hatch. It would look sweet, and it's the perfect time to do it because you'll be getting the hatch painted.

Essentially, it would look like one piece.

Actually, if I was going to do that, I'd accentuate the curve a little more ala' 98-02 SS Camaro. THAT would be bada**. But, I don't feel like putting that much effort into it. When I actually do this work though......who knows.
