just paying a buddy to swap it for me he has the same engine in his car and has some stuff to put on it to help get more hp i dont quite know what yet but he says his engine has about 400 hp right now
no i dont have the know how when it comes to engines just everything eles about a car except that so i dont want to do it myself.

BEWARE this guy. Seriously, be very careful. 400hp out of a 5sfe is near impossable and would cost upwards of at least $15k (estimate). This is what my dad and I refer to a BSer. Dad has his own business and so does my uncle and we will all tell you, you don't want to deal with a BSer, cause they're just full of it. They'll tell you they know all kinds of things when they don't know jack. I don't care if it's your best friend or even a brother, don't trust this person. Even if he has a 3sgte, 400hp is very rare.

essentially same motor, but i would do a little homework on it first, see about wiring diagrams and check if the connections are the same, mainly the ecu connections and see if there are any differences. i would try using the MR2s ECU if possible just incase there are any subtle differences. as far as the motor being mounted in the back... no difference since you will want to reuse your celica transmission, you should probably have whoever you have do the swap also tear down and rebuild your tranny while its out. i didnt check, but if you have a MT, i would recommend resurfacing the flywheel and getting a new clutch disk and anything else showing severe wear from 160,000 miles, if you have an AT just make sure the torque converter is in good shape because thats usually one of the big things that needs to be rebuilt.

AND ALSO REMEMBER: JUST BECAUSE ITS LOWER MILAGE DOESNT MEAN ITS IN BETTER CONDITION... leakdown and compression test is a MUST before putting your car under the knife, remove the head and check the valves for any seating issues, scarring on the walls, and any bent valves, used motors, more-so than any other used parts are always a major gamble.

What I am saying is that going to a 5sfte can net you HUGE increases performance wise (on a percentage basis) over the 5sfe. Look at Manny (presure2) making 210+whp and 230ft/lbs+ torque and the stock 5sfe makes about 120whp. The suggestion that turboing a 5sfe is a "baby step" in power is not accurate - especially when you compare it to adding a cold air intake and synthetic oil like he has recommended to people in the past. I think we as a community need to do just as bulldog says and try to correct misinformation that is propogated by others.

You're right. After I posted that, I seen Shin's car and looked at what he posted about it. I thought about going back and editting my post. 5sfe isn't a baby set, but I'll stand by what I said that those guys all really want to go with a 3sgte. There's only so much you can get out of a 5sfte. But, that continues to be proven wrong. So, I don't know.

yeah there are risks with buying a used motor but it has been fully cleaned and comes with a 1 yr warrenty so if anything goes wrong at least i have a warrenty if i wasnt getting one i probably wouldn't buy a used motor for that much. also my buddy says he knows all about the ecu and the wiring harness and wont be a problem he just did he swap not too long ago and everything about these motors but thanks for everybodys concern
maybe he ment 140 hp. not 400. i hardly know a whole lot on engines and im thinking that a NA 5sfe next near to impossible - in practical means. that must be some serious 200 angle valve job smile.gif

the 1/4 doesnt have patience for a ST.... so we make them ST-T's so atleast we'll sound good going slow.
ive yet to see even a 300hp 5sfte....

I don't think there's been a 250whp 5sfte yet. I'll have to check. I think Manny definately holds the record, and I know his last dyno isn't as high as what he running now too. Shin is close on his heals. I'll have to check about that though, I'm not positive. There could be someone else.

what about front clips anyone know how much these are and if they work on a 5fse?
I think you need to ask yourself a few questions before you continue this thread, because I've been following it and you're kinda all over the place.

1) How bad is your current engine? Does it run? Can it be fixed? Did you take it to more than one mechanic to get an estimate and find out exactly what they think is wrong with it?

2) How much are you willing to spend?

3) Are you trying to replace your engine with a nice reliable totally street legal 5SFE, or are you looking for performance?

Personally speaking, it sounds like you're not sure what you want. If you're happy with your car, just do the simple thing and take your car to some toyota specialist (NOT THE DEALER!), have them source you an engine and do the install. It'll probably come with a warrantee and that way you don't lose a friend when that MR2 engine blows up on you in 2 months (I don't recommend doing business like this with friends unless you're willing to take on all the liability yourself).

To answer your question, you don't need a clip if all you want is a new 5SFE. Clips are for more complicated swaps, like the 3SGTE, which is not street legal, but you can get around it with a little work if that's what you're looking for. If that is what you're looking for plan to spend about an extra 3k over the cost of replacing your 5SFE. Good luck.
