I was always curious of how to tell if the MR2 tranny was LSD(meaning the tranny is out of engine bay not connected to motor)? I was told that if you look though the axel hole, there should be a bar going across, but if a bar runs across the axle hole then how would the axle go in? Some body who knows please post...
How to tell from a E153 - 6G Celicas Forums
>
Actually it's vise-versa. If you pull the axle and look in there, and there is a pin (the diff pin) visible, then you do NOT have LSD, it's an open diff. If there is no pin, then it's a Helical LSD.
The pin is deep in there, it doesn't interfere with the axle going in.

You don't need the axles at all, you need to remove the axles if they are installed, and look in the hole in the tranny that they would go in.

If you see a bar going across is also considered an lsd tranny
I think there are 2 kinds of lsd tranny for the mr2
the one with the bar
2nd one would be a big hole followed by the a small hole
The one with the bar across, I'm 100 % positive that it is an lsd coz thats what I have on my car right now.
the 2nd one, I'm not too sure about it.
Please correct me if I'm wrong

To MY knowledge, which contradicts Doc's and I dont like that, is that the bar means OEM LSD (2nd pic), the top pic is an open differential and the bottom is TRD LSD.

I think you're right actually, I was going by how we tell with the E58 tranny which is the same thing as an E153 internally (pretty much), and I figured they would be the same...
I can't see a difference between the top and bottom pics though...

I dont see anything like those pic on my tranny? And what is the difference between open differantial and LSD(what it does)? I know LSD spins both wheels but what does open differantial do?

correct me if am wrong but another way to tell if the tranny is equiped with lsd is when the axles are in place and you spin one wheel (while car is in air) the other wheel should spin in the same direction. Ex. if you turn the left wheel forward, than the right wheel should spin forward, and vice versa. if there is no lsd, then the wheels would spin opposite from each other. EX. push right tire forward, left wheels spins backward.
>
Depends on the type of LSD you have. This method does not work for a stock LSD in an E-153.

this did happen to me when i put in my 92' e-153 in, and i do have that bar accross the hole in the picture, so does that mean my lsd is not stock or what?
how can u tell is a lsd,
if i look in that axle hole i can see through the other side that does has a pin, that block both axle.
what if have pin in the middle of center...
the picture i am talk about the 2nd picture.

the mr2 lsd have it...but it is kind of heard to explain...for example the mr2 lsd will have the bar in the hole and the mr2 non-lsd will not...but on the celica gt/st etc....the tranny has the bar in the hole too but doesn't have lsd...so i recommend you take the transmission id number to the dealer and look it up or i can do it for you...just pm me the transmission ID number....
