air/fuel ratio gauges are bull - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #32937 14 posts Started by southwest2118
I was reading about how air/fuel ratio gauges are bull.
my cars a daily driver. and I'm not going to be pushing
it too hard but once in a while i will . so do think a
Autometer type gauge will do? will having its own sensor help?

I don't think i will need wideband. kindasad.gif

give me your opinion smile.gif
If you dont plan on buying a wideband, dont buy a A/F gauge at all. Non widebands are useless.

I would suggest boost, oil pressure, EGT, or water temp.

I will return one day.
thats a little extreme not necessarily useless.... depends on your uses really. They will give you some idea just no use for tuning. maybe useful as a basic monitor...
so if i'm running really lean/rich i wount even know with a 70$ gauge?
a good suggestion is to get it tuned - to keep it just right. hit the dyno and dont worry about it , but keep the afr to monitor the situation

the 1/4 doesnt have patience for a ST.... so we make them ST-T's so atleast we'll sound good going slow.

correct. Some say that a narrow band can tell you about changes that occur during driving (without accurately giving figures) but I would never rely on one. There is a really good thread about EGT, Wideband O2, and Narrowband O2 guages on honda-tech I will see if I can dig up for you.

Whats a EGT gauge and what does it do?
EGT gauges read the exhaust gas temperature. If you look at mannys turbo manifold, you can see where he had it tapped for the temp sensor right on top.

Having an EGT gauge will help you determine if your engine is running too hot, give you an idea as to whether its cooled down properly before shut-down, and so on. Useful I'm sure to see if your running close to a pemature detonation also when you crank your boost up.

3rd gen ST205 3SGTE - Alive and boosting.
A/F gaues are pretty.

...and thats about it.

yah i regret buying mine.. laugh.gif coulda gotten myself a nice egt or volt meter or something in place of my 3rd pod that my a/f is current occupying kindasad.gif

bboy

..(formerly daily driven) 3S-GTE powered celica currently set @ 12psi..
If you buy a wideband with your a/f your a whole lot better off.

actaully guys, I bought an Innovate LC-1 and a Autometer air\fuel guage. With the dual outputs of the LC1 I have instant wideband on the guage and datalogging on my lap top.
recent tests show that the innovate wideband readings are slightly out, up to .7 at times

imo the techedge seems better
