5SFE vs 7AFE Engine Hoods - 6G Celicas Forums

Need your help. I am considering purchasing Jspec3sge's (Ryan's) mint condition stock red engine hood from his 1994 ST (7AFE). From the pics, you can see it has no lining under the hood (just bare metal). Is this standard on STs? Both my GTs have thick lining under the hood. Doesn't this help keep the metal hood insulated/cooler after running the engine? I think it would be hard to "transplant" the lining from one hood to the other. Thanks. smile.gif

my 98 gt had no lining under the hood. so some have it and some dont. dosnt really matter all that much tho

the only drawback to not having the lining is that i would noticed a little bit of steam on the top of the hood when it was raining out. im guessing the lining would prevent this

the lining is a fire retardant.

It is held on by small plastic tabs, if there is a fire under the hood, the tabs melt and the lining drops to help put the fire out or at least help it from spreading.

it isn't hard to swap the lining, just be careful and don't break the tabs thumbsup.gif

i tried to take mine out so i could wash it cuz its covered w/ oil, so i dont think it would HELP put out the fire any lol. Anyway, the tabs are hard to get out, idk how you do it.
It's not just about getting from point A to point B anymore....

exactly, so unless you plan on having an engine fire it won't do much. some cars have them some don't, i might take mine off since it's kind of droopy and stained

As far as I know you just have to cut the tabs and buy new ones if you want to tack it back on. The guy at our shop who does paintless dent removal just cuts the tabs if he needs to take off the lining then has new tabs to hang it again.

getting ruined by the heat cause by the engine.

That's very possable. My hood was fine at 11 years old. I removed the lining to fit my strut brace in. I just pulled the tabs, so they will come out. I might put it back in, but it's a little wieght I can save and not have too much of an impact. Hood should last at least 5 years without it.

i have a 95 st, and no lining, no problems. i dont like them at all any way on any car because all they do is get covered in oil and fall apart.

Mine was fine when I took it out. I've got that header now though, and it's uncovered. That could cause more heat. I'm going to make a cover for the thing. I don't want to ruin my new paint.

I think your paint will be fine without the lining, lots and lots of cars have been without that lining for many years with no problems.

my cusco front strut tower bar vibrates very slightly on my hood. not that bad but i know the noise is there. anybody else have this problem?

Yup. I cut notches in the hood to fit it in better. It looks a lot better than it sounds.

I ripped mine off long ago. It's the keep the heat from ruining the paint on the hood, but our engines don't get hot enough to require one. They just look like crap and generally look even worse with age.

YOU GUYS ARE IGNORNANT! How many times does it have to be said that it is not for protection of the paint?! It is to smother an engine fire if it was ever to happen in the engine bay. You make it sound like if you don't have the lining on it then your paint will just melt away. If your car is going to get heat damage then it will be with our without the lining (trust me, there's an eclipse in our wholesale lot where I work that has heat damage on the paintfrom the turbo even through the lining.)

It is not a paint protectant. Lol I guess I just don't understand how some people think car paint is so delicate, I remember a thread a long time ago where someone thought that the brush on their ice scraper would scratch the hell out of their paint and wanted like a super soft brush to brush snow off of the car. It takes a lot to mess up the paint of a car.

It actually easier then you think to damage the paint.

And who's Celica here has ever caught fire? You really think that mat is going to help? If you were drivingand the engine caught fire, it would do jack ****.

I might sell you mine, I'm contemplating pulling it off since some of my pins for it are broken.

I have a fire extinguiser if I catch on fire. It's hidden in my trunk, but I have a feeling I'll be able to get to it fast if my motor goes up. I had to buy it after I seen that notorious video of that VW GTi burning up. I just couldn't let that happen to my baby.

No. It wasn't big and it was on the bottom of the bay. I caught it before it became bigger. Some oil leaked out of a fitting and hit my flex pipe and caught, luckily I stopped just in time before it got out of control.

i would assume any good autobody supply shop, or toyota prolly.

I think you can even get them at autozone or similar places. My dads got a ton of them sitting around his shop.
