How much weight does a full tank of gas add to our Celicas? Does it slow them down at all, or does it even weigh enough to matter?

I looked online & found a bunch of different answers for how much a gallon of gas weighs...some say 6.5lbs some say 8lbs. So I have no idea if a full tank adds 78lbs or 96lbs to our car. Someone help Maybe ill start driving around w/ only 2 - 3 gallons @ a time haha....(unless im on a road trip of course)

i can't exactly tell, unless you're able to tell me the density of the fuel u use, it can vary with octane.

I believe density of gasoline changes depending on it's temperature. From what I read, the weight of gasoline at 72 degrees F is approximately 6.25 lbs per gallon.

So a little math: my GT has a 15.9 Gallon tank. If it is completely full, the weight of the fuel (at 72 degrees) will be approx. 99.375 lbs. Keep in mind, the colder the fuel is, the more dense it will become (thus heavier). The warmer the fule, the less dense (thus lighter).

Hope that's right. Anyone else have any ideas on the matter?

i think TheRockman got it right.

So, let's round off the celica's tank to 16gal. even. It's filled to the brim. At 72 degrees fahrenheit, the fuel in that tank will weigh exactly 100lbs.

And like he said, the weight will vary with the temperature.

I dont notice that much difference in performance wise,
when having a full tank or not.
But I wish the fuel gauge never goes down

16 Gallon tank?! mine is only 12.6 gallons everytime i fill them up from empty? If i add more it will overflow..

I think once the gas light shows up you have around 3 gallons left. On Empty like 1.5 I assume.

By adding weight to the gas tank you actually move the center of gravity lower and more toward the center of the car thus improving handling. I wouldn't know how to quantify the improvement but it could be significant given the added 100lbs.

lol i disagree , very first time i filled my prelude up (full tank) i lost the end on a corner i've taken(faster) thousands of times before and since , my only thought at the time was that the full tank had made the rear of the car heavier . Maybe not but it was the only thing different.

That was the end of that honda adventure !

Tire pressure, road/tire temperature, inexperience driving with full tank of gas. Could be anything. The physics of it are fairly simple though.

To illustrate this another way: My truck rear end slides around fairly easy if it's unloaded. When I put all my tools in it's almost impossible for the engine to spin the rear tires or cut loose in a corner.

my gas light usually come on when I hit 1/4 of a tank, and when i fill it up it right at the E and only 12.6G to fill up?

128 oz = 1 gallon

16 oz = 1 pound

128/16 = 8 pounds per gallon

If my math is correct then a full tank if its about 13 gallons = 104 pounds.

i think its cuz of weight and the fire department requires this so that incase ur car catches on fire you dont have a full tank of gas in there!

and yes the reason people race with low fuel is because of weight, there is nothing reguarding safety or fire hazard.

the only problem is you can run into issues with starving your fuel pump if you run too low due to sloshing and shifting of the fuel inside the tank, it also can begin to vaporize further increasing the chance of starving the motor. my friends saturn SC2 has a very well designed fuel tank and he has run many autox events when the fuel light has been on all day long, though i wouldnt recommend it. personally i try to run between 1/4 and 1/8 of a tank. but in all honesty the difference is negligable and you wont see a difference unless your skill level has hit a plateau and you are running very consistant times.

oh and if i remember correctly you are mixing fluid ounces with a weight ounces that only works with distilled water nat

^^ i beg to differ...most dont ask u to have fuel cells in street classes so the track asks you not to run with more than 1/4 tank so incase ur car flips or something u dont have alot of gas! my dad use to race cars and thats what he said

no youre mixing fluid oz's and "mass" oz's. did a quick calculation, at .73 g/cc (average gasoline density, varies with temp and type) 15.9 gallons comes to 96.87lb, as calculated above.

ive never had an issue with that... maybe thats something they do with street mod drag cars, whenever ive been to a track and gone through tech ive never had an issue reguardless how much fuel ive had, then again im not an avid drag racer, but i asked a friend heres his answer:

K2MR2t91 (6:03:49 PM): is there any rules reguarding a limit to how much fuel you can carry when drag racing? obviously you want to run as little fuel as possible for weight, but is there a safety or fire hazard requirement?

no need to go anal on me lol all i was doing was showing we were both correct.

and the reason for asking my friend is i like to have credable evidance to support a claim i make unlike a lot of people on here. and no i am not saing "a lot of people" in reference to you, because i do realize your dad seems to be a pretty credable source as well from alot of the past info he has given you... thats one of the reasons i wanted to double check my info. So no, i am not attempting to attack you or discredit you or your father. no your mixing up mass and volume, if that was true than water and gas would be the same density as jelly
