CV boot is craked? - 6G Celicas Forums

Like the topic says, this boot is cracked all around and grease is all over the place. Im not sure what it is called.

Also, is the transaxle seal right where the axel comes out of the tranny?

cv boot. Get it repaired as soon as you can or you eventually will need a new axel. It usually does take awhile for that though.

Thanks. I thought it was the CV, just wanted to make sure.

Since it is now craked, how long does it take for something like that to fully crack/ break all the way around?

What is the usual cost of this replacement for someone to do it?
Same thing happened to me and I put off replacing it for a long time. Then it snaps one day while I was driving and I was stuck in the middle of the road.

Get it replaced asap.
I also need a new boot, but I heard it easier just to change the whole axel.
same thing happened to me a while ago. cost $500 bucks to fix.

It's less of a hassle. You've got it that far apart so you might as well replace the whole thing.

its a ticking timebomb and when it brakes, your car will need to be towed.

get a new rebuild axel and install it yourself. its not that hard.

Shoot well looks like this is going to put off my bearing replacement. How would one go about changing this out and how long would it take? I have a chiltons, but i am at work and can't look it up now.

is the part called a CV Halfshaft that I want? (looking at sutozone website).

cuz it ****ed it all! read it right! iono how the **** it's sarcasm. so get ur **** straight.
when a ****in axle snap. it pulls ur wheel in, grinding ur caliber on the damn rotors, stripping part of ur bearings, then when pieces are starting to get hot and especially when its also raining. it will crack. god damn that pisses me off.

Damn, chill out. That much stuff breaking because of a snapped axle was pretty amazing that's why I thought you were trying to be a smart-ass since I just said replace the whole thing since you've got it all apart. The aftermath from that broken axle is probably the worst I've ever heard of. Sorry man. Good luck gettin' it all fixed.

Just replace the whole axel,I just got a rebuilt axle with new inner and outer cv's. it's not that hard and it's easier than mucking round pulling the joint apart. It was 180 bucks for the axle (but i had to give them mine back) and it took a couple of hours. the worst part is getting the wheel lug nut off. 32mm i think. good luck.
This is very easy fix. First off be careful with auto parts store you go to, to get the rebuilt half shaft (axel). Some places dont go through very good rebuilders. And yes, do it your self. You will only pay about 120 for the axel, then once you bring in the broken one there will be a core charge and will get about 50 dollars back. So all in all you will only be spending about 70 bucks. Not bad at all. -Jim

I was just quoted 200$ for parts labor and tax to replace the axel w/ boot. that a good price?

Sounds about right. If you've got the tools and time you can save yourself about $100 if you do it yourself.

I am doing mine at my friends work. I just ordered both axels and a rear sway bar link for $190 from a website. We should be able to get it done within an hour or two.
I'd like to do it myself, but backsurgery + cold weather means I have to go to friends who don't like the cold.. Looks like Im paying 200$ ..lol
i got quoted today for $210. Gettin the rotors rounded for $8 @ O reilly. The bearings, shaft, caliper, and hub. I guess thats what i get for procrastinating about changing my axle. frown.gif u live u learn.

I'd really rather not pay 200 to do. I'd love to do it myself so I learn more about the car.

what all is require to remove to get to the axel?
Take wheel off, then then axel hub nut (a real beast, sometimes its extremely tight) then 3 bolts to seperate the wheel hub from the suspension, then get the axel out of the wheel hub, and carefully have someone tap the end of the axel where it is connected to the tranny housing while you work it out of the housing. Keep in mind this is all related to the passenger side axel. I also removed that damn crossmember bar. And had something to support the engine so i could remove the rear mount. Made it easier to get at things. The drivers side is all similar to these steps.

ok. but do I need to take out the whole axle to just replace part of it? Im not familiar with the axel by any means.

I think someone mentions a half shaft (reman) is what I'd need... shoot wish I had my chiltons to look at here at work..
