Looking at them closer they look more like leds.

Yeah it was like a bunch of LEDs and some resistors if I remember correctly. But I like the clear housing more than anything.

at first when I looked at them they looked cheezy but on closer inspection they are very well done and kinda cool (wouldn't want on my car though)

imo, the only thing that doesn't look modern on the celica is the tails, those tails are the closest thing to modern car tail lights. I think they are awsome and would fit the celica very well if the housing was round, not square.
