I had a question, ive been watching and listenting to all the tuners talk about the power increase per psi on their turbo'd cars...but how many hp's does the 3sgte make per pound of boost? i know its somewhere on here but i cant find it. someone told me for every psi its like 5 hp? different people tell me different things but then again, they dont have the almighty 3SGTE!

and if the stock 3sgte is 225hp at stock boost with a fmic, how much boost can you turn it up to safely? (lagos, tweak anybody?)

I've heard 5, and I've heard 7. So, I take the avg. of 6.

The 2nd gen is 221hp (225ps) with a TMIC - FMIC will probably raise the HP slightly so maybe in the end you'll end up with 225hp. Safely with a FMIC you can probaby get away with up to 15 but people have blown engines on less pressure, so its basically a "at your own risk" kinda thing. I have my car at 12 right now I am planning on going 13 or 14 and I'm using an ST185RC intercooler so I think I'll feel decently safe around there. The CT26 runs out of steam in the 15psi area.

There is a law of diminishing returns - especially with the ct26. Each psi starts off at about 10whp on a properly intercooled set-up. By the time you get to 15psi, the incremental step of going to 16psi only adds a few more horsepower.

WOW....Thats alot! so a stock 3sgte runs about 160 whp as stated but thats on stock boost? and if you increase the boost (takign appropriate measures) you would gain about 40 hp @ the wheels? that sounds pretty good! i didnt know the stock 3sgte runs only 160whp. alot of people say that they beat the swapped out civics regularly but i heard the h22's and b16's are like 180hp i think? how can we regularly beat lighter cars that are 180 hp on a basic 3sgte swap with a FMIC?

Well heres the thing, alot of ppl on here arent using USDM 3sgte's they are using JDM 3s's with the accompanying ECU which is 221hp and so its like 180whp. Then we have modifications like intake & exhaust so we're probably at 200whp and our cars are only ~2600lbs.

no no no .. here is the deal. usdm motors are slower by at least 20hp to the wheels. jdm ones are faster because of a different ecu and a ceramic turbo. so sometimes you can see a bone stock mr2, with a restrictive exhaust, tiny stock side mount IC and running only 8 psi do some pathetic number like 160hp (at the wheels, as stated in that primer).

jdm swaps in a celica will give you a rough ball park of 200hp AT THE WHEELS. most people get 20-30hp above that with a good intercooler, upgraded downpipe, exhaust, and a boost controller.

now here is something almost everyone forgets about. the power you will get from a swap, is just the starting point. the motor has so much potential for upgrades. it really opens you up to a whole new world. a simple turbo upgrade can change the car in a major way.

I was hoping you would show up and school me! i didnt know that about the ceramic turbo. i looked at the link and was like wait a minute...ONLY 160? i almost was dismayed....so when i get the swap, OBVIOUSLY JDM is the way to go, im going to ask dr tweak about that when he moves here to the carolinas.
oh by the way. that 200hp at the wheels is with stock boost @ what like 10psi? so if youre running at 14psi thats about an additional 40hp plus the extra 20-30 u told me for a good ic, and piping equaling to about 260 right?

here is one that claims to be a bone stock 5th gen with the top mount intercooler and no special mods



now here is one that is at 15psi, with a full 3in exhaust and a fmic.
Max WHP: 233@ 5700rpm
Max Torque: 221@ 5400rpm



youll get results somwhere within that ballpark, and basically have a car that is around 225-260hp at the crank (if u want to compare it to hondas or other cars being sold). then if you get hungry for more power, your only 600-800$ away from a ct20b or ct27 turbo upgrade, that will take you to the next level without any other mods.

the stock USDM 2nd gen 3sgtes normal boost were more at an average of 7psi. anywhere from 6-8psi depending on condition. the jdm is like 8-10psi or 8-11psi...dont remember. i think my jdm was doing like 8 on average and 8.5-9psi on cold cold weather.

edit: sorry misread your post lol but yah ive heard from people with jdm 3sgtes get anywhere from 190-200whp on stock everything
