Broken Exhaust Manifold Bolt - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #34719 11 posts Started by TRD-ST204
Today I was looking around my engine and found that there was a exhaust manifold nut missing. So I looked closely and realized that half of the bolt was snapped off. What can I do to fix it? Is there replacement studs that I can use? If so how would I take off the broken half? Thanks

toyota will sell you a new stud. should be able to take the old one out with craftsman bolt extractors.

If you can't get it out by hammering it, you'll have to drill it out. When I say hammer, what you do is find a little edge were you can tap the screw in a counter clockwish motion. Drilling it out and retapping are a little bit of an ordeal. If you get so far as drilling it, make sure you tap it with the right size by taking out another bolt and matching the patterns.

if the stud is sticking out of the head at all, they normally come out pretty easy.
best thing to do is use 2 bolts if you can get them on, or craftsman also makes a stud extractor that works well.

if all eles fails i have the whole exhaust manifold for sale with all the bolts and nutz i have a posting with pics
Thanks, I'll try to get it out tomorrow.
When mine broke, I had to drill the broken stud because it was about three threads inside the head. I drilled it and tried to use and easy out. No luck! Eventually had to drill out the old bolt and tap a larger hole. I was told to find a stud that had two different sizes to it, but ended up using a heli coil. (I am not sure if I spelt that right). I placed it in the one size larger hole and then placed a stud that was the same size as the rest of the stock ones. That was four months ago and seems to be holding fine.
whatever u do dont use a gator-grip LMAO

as seen on tv BS laugh.gif
Just to be safe, why is the bolt broken off? Does your pipe bend down pretty far to the ground before it goes up under the crossmember? Has is bottomed out right there and possibly casue the pipe to ripple up and crack a bolt. Check the manifold closely just to be safe.

This is technically the best way to make this kind of repair, a helicoil is actually stronger than the original thread.
