Is it necessary that you clean your air intake? How does one go about doing that? Thanks all.

i'm sure it is... if you have a K&N I think you can do some kinda oil recharge or something
but since I have one of those cheap cone filters... i'll probably just buy another one for like 10 or 12 bucks..

anyone else know how to actually clean it?
soap and hot/warm water. and scrub it with a brush/tooth brush. then get the k&n filter stuff. u can use it with all filters. trust me, my family owns a salvage yard and we do the same thing.

its a 2 part cleaner and yes works on any filter lol, its like spray it and let it soak then wash and spray the second substance, somehting like that nature, then let it sit over night and ur done
ok that k&n filter stuff is what makes the filter purple lookin u have to clean it with soap and water then let it air dry, then put the filter stuff on it. if ya dont do it that way ur filter will become cloged. and useless.

Paper filters do not appreciate being wetted down. If you have a paper filter, which is the usual type, compressed air will do fine.
K&N and other cotton filters require a cleaner that removes the oil and then a re-oiling (oil is what actually catches the smaller particulate matter in a cotton filter). The kits come with both, and instructions on how to properly care for your cotton fibre filter.
For your intake, a basic wipe down with soap and water will do. Carb cleaner is a good idea for the throttle body intake.

Galcobar is right. You can only wash/re-use cotton filters, not the paper kind. You probably don't remember, but the package your filter came in usually says what the filter material is made of.
