Is that why Toyota doesn't have a real competiter now? Did that thing 10 years ago really affect it that much?

Mmm. And no different really than numerous bits of F1 design to get around regulations.....

JDM ST205Blitz Spec NUR Exhaust, somewhere over $1000Needing another one 18000 miles later, bloody annoying.
i read this before... that's why the st205 were the last ones to be made. and toyota could no longer use the same platform anymore which is why they brought out the corolla WRC. or so i've heard....

I have heard about this device thing for a long time but never read an article about it. I would really like to see a good pic of it so see what it was able to do that made an extra 50hp!
"Toyota" was not banned from anything. Toyota Team Europe was... and it had little bearing on whether a GT4 model was made after the 6th gen, it was a congnative decision for numerous reasons, mainly sales.

Change in the rules allowing WRC spec cars rather than GroupA. This meant that the 'donor' car didn't need to be 4wd or turbocharged for the race car to be a 4wd turbo monster. Made cars cheaper to produce. Means that these days you cannot buy a 4wd turbo nutter Focus/206/Xsara/Accent etc. Which is a same.

In addition, the 'rolla is shorter and higher than the ST205, which better suited the new type of rally stage.

It just cracked the restrictor open and allowed more air.

You need to remember, a GroupA/WRC car could develop somewhere in the region of 500-600bhp if it was allowed to breathe properly.

To limit power, the FIA rule that all cars must breathe through a standard size restrictor (28mm I think). This effectively means all the cars have pretty much the same horsepower.

basically it was a piece of elastic that stayed collapsed when the car wasnt moving but when it was it opened up to allow more air in giving them about 15hp. this was not the years they won the championships with the 3sgte though, i think this was after.
