I'd go with eclipse cuz u will never make a reliable PC, you will need to shut it down before you turn off the car, then power up and it will be loading for couple of minuts which is kinda stupid. Eclipse will work good, have good sound and it will have 3d GPS compare to PC were u'll never find a good GPS program.
http://www.mp3car.com/if you get the right parts and do your research, you can buld a very reliable carputer. I built mine about a year ago and have not had any problems with it. If you get the correct power supply, one made for a carputer and install the right shutdown program on the OS, you simply turn your car off and walk away. The power supply will recognize the dorp in voltage and remain on for another few seconds which gives the computer time to shut itself off. Boot up time for my computer is about 35 seconds if you streamline windows. And finally, iGuidance for windows works better than a lot of in house GPS systems i have seen. Tons of points of interest, total maps or US and Canada, and has never given me bad directions once. Plus there is this cool british lady voice that guides you around.
Not to discount the eclipse, because that is an amazing unit! But i build my entire system, including $100 for the GPS software and $250 for the touchscreen monitor, for about $700.
