E brake doesnt work too well.... - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #35550 7 posts Started by CelicaB
I know on some of my friends cars you can yank the e- brake and lock up the back tires and all and the brake seems very strong but my e brake wont even hold the car on a small incline and never has worked too well.
I was just wondering the first things you guys would check out? i figured the wire was pinched somewhere and the wire was just stretched out but i still wanted your opinions

BTW: its a 94 ST and ive adjusted it so it starts to pull at about 7 or 8 "clicks" but its still real weak and u know just somthing isnt right about it

Thanks in advance -B

Where did you adjust it at? the rear wheels? I would tighten it up back there. If you take your drum off the back there will be a little wheel-looking thing with many-a-teeth. click that over a few times. If I remember correctly, that is your e-brake tensioner.

yeah i figured id try that after i didnt see anything too visible... i assume they did that when they redid the rear brakes

but is has always been really weak even before i got new drums and shoes -thats kinda why i figured it was the wire somewhere?

Im not sure, but theres a nut where the e-brake is, id take a pic of it if you need me to. But i think its like 10mm nut, just tighten that. That worked for me.
Check the spring near the tensioner, might be old, streched, or not connected.

do what he said ... depending on how warn you drum an or shoes are .. you might have to tighten the to 10mm nuts all the away down ... thats what i had to do ... now my ebrake holds my car on ever step hills... with only 2 clicks ..
