Yes you will need a ballast resistor placed across the 2 indicator wires. As for the bulbs you can get them with 12 leds facing forwards and 6 facing backwards at an angle, the rear facing ones light is reflected all out of the entire unit, it can be seen from the side perfectly fine. PLUS they will last a hell of alot longer than a conventional bulb.
The only other option with a clear unit is the silver conventional bulbs mate and if you really want to go for those then I'd be expecting to have a crash at some point cos you REALLY cant see those lighting up from any direction unless its at night then they are ok.
Anyway that was your opinion this is mine, we'll just have to disagree.
