Will a larger wattage power supply blow up my computer? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #38579 10 posts Started by tomazws
So, this customer have a dead 150W power supply and would like a replacement. The thing is right now it's really hard to find a 150W power supply, so I suggest him to upgrade to a 250W, 300W, 350W whatever... but then he asked "Will it blow up my computer? What if it fried my computer? Is your company gonna take full responsibility?"

How would you explain the extra 200, 300W won't fry his stupid thing?!?!??!??

Geez I feel so dumb..

lol tell him the power supply only outputs as much power as teh computer needs, its stores the rest within itself.

i got it... it's not a constant output, it's just a max output it could provide depending on the computer components...

btw.. is it wattage? or voltage?

It's wattage that's important. Of course, it's about QUALITY wattage...
I don't cheap out on my power supplies since it's one of those components that can really screw up your system if you get a crappy one. Stick with one of the brand names; Antec/Enermax/Thermaltake/OCZ/FSP.

I'm sure you know your stuff if you're selling them, but make sure the 150W isn't from some propritary case like a Dell, Shuttle, or similar. Those require their own power supplies (plugs and sizes are different).
yes, youll be fine throwing something bigger into it.

Thanks for the answers!

No, it's not one of those weird micro-atx sfx stuff, it's just a standard PS/2 ATX. =)

tell him a 300 watt antec is better than any 150 watt ps, bad power supplies will fry his system, he wants reliable and dependability.
