Hey all, I plan on rebuilding a 3sge engine and im going the whole nine yards....itb's, strokin it, balanced and blu-printed..etc...anywho, i honestly have never, worked on an engine to this extent, (in other words i dont know what im doin), but im hopin that in the process i do learn alittle somn, while at the same time, get somethin out of this.....but thats not my point......if i had an infinite budget, and keepin things, on an all-motor perspective, about how much hp gains could i expect from this?...Ive read, of the beams engine, and several other 3rd gen n/a 3sge's puttin up numbers in the 250's and up, when built correctly, so about how much do yall think i would be able to attain.....please flame all yall want, im still gonna do this, regardless of what anyone says.....im just lookin from some positive input.....

So anyway... What gen 3sge? An all na setups are ok. Boost is better but hey its your car. ITBS are the way to go for NA. Stroking it. Basicly anyway you can raise your compression ratio to make more horsepower is always good.

IM working with a 3rd gen 3sge, with a budget btwn 10000-12000.....i, spread over a 2year period....anywho, im hoping to attain at least 250hp, with really high compression numbers.....like 12.1/13.1........right now, im tryin to figure out how realistic are those numbers, and if a 3sge can even withstand that kind of compression....thats all im really tryin to ask...

yupp sure can. People have done it before. Not on celicas on Mr2s I have seen it done.

Why na why not FI?

If you have that much over a two year period you could easily make the motor so much more powerful... Not that 3sge but a 3sgte.

Well, thats realxing to know that those numbers sound alittle bit more realistic to more than just myself.....anywho, i figured, everyone has a 3sgte nowawdays...why not make a n/a turbo killer...but seriously i just want something different....and when put together with what the rest of my car is gonna be, i think that it will really stand out....but thanks for the input burneed....

people talk alot about swapping but mostly pipedreaming. Here in pgh there are 2 swaps.

People outside of the celica community have no clue about a 3sgte in a celica.

Your talking about a motor that is 3 steps away from easily being turbo'd. If you want a truely faster Celica, turbo it.

If you just want to do something different, build a paseo rock climber - I guarentee you'll be the only person in the US with one.

Good point but, that is something that i always keep in the back of my mind....but i decided that n/a was the better route for me......true i could easily spend 2500 on a 3sgte and get better or more for less.......but i had plans to rebuild AN engine...figured the 3sge would be cheaper for what i wanted, a completely rebuilt engine ,......and besides, per say i changed my mind and wanted to turbo my 3sge.....i can ALWAYS, make that decision...when its in my car, before i start work on it....whenever....basically...i know yall are thinking im stupid or crazy...or "hey its his money", but like i said its what im lookin to do....

yeah i guess this is the monthly posting huh...well someone had to do it...and fyi, try to give someone the benefit of the doubt before you assume they will try to run a turbo with that kind of compression......

You're expecting too much. FYI... the Toyota 3SG RACE engine in the Altezza only made 250 hp at something like 9000 rpms. You can't realistically jump 50-60hp in n/a trim without a COMPLETE build-up and I mean COMPLETE... from pistons to rods, to headwork, to cams, to electricals, to exhaust tuning, intake tuning, ecu tuning... probably more than you can realistically do... since you had to even ask. Since you've admitted never doing anything like this before... perhaps you should consider taking baby steps...

Alright yall, set a fool straight.......I still am going to rebuild the 3sge, but decided to look at the FI options as well......im kinda one of those ppl, who are too stubborn too listen to others, but anywho i want to do this right, and listening to yall is the better route. Anywho, if i decided to go FI, whats the best route?....turbo or SC?

IMHO turbo is the better route for the celica. Most of the suprecharger kits for our cars are exspensive, and offer little improvement over stock. Superchargers are also more limited in terms of the potential compared to a turbo charger. A turbo charger will be able to give you more power for cheaper than the price you would pay for any supercharger i have seen on the market for our cars so far. The 3sgte is prolly just the best route for power and price. but thats just my opinion. I say, if you want to build up your 3sge, then you should do it. It would be nice to see some more variety in what people are doing

what type turbocharger would be best to start looking at, as far as a custom setup goes....in the past ive looked at the t3/t4.......and also, can someone school me on turbocharger selection

Search for other posts on this subject - definately discussed before.

Simply put - the 3sge and 3sgte are nearly identical. Same head and block layout. So any parts for the same gen 3sgte will bolt right up. I used stock turbo pistons, rc 550 injectors, and a modified greddy knock off turbo kit. The stock 3SGTE manifold will bolt up too.

I've got a beams 3S in my car with bolt on mods, and have another one that I'm building up over time, and I regret NOTHING.

I'd gladly go down this route again.

well although the 3SGTE parts can just bolt up to a 3SGE, they are not the same. They have different internals and different compression ratios. If you turbo a 3SGE running at 6psi of boost will have higher compression than a 3SGTE running 6psi of boost becuase the 3SGE was not made to be turbo, so the stock compression was made higher to help compensate.

True, you can only run low boost on the stock 3rd gen 3SGE due to the 10.5:1 comp ratio - hense the reason I mentioned the stock turbo pistons. Nearly everything else internally is the same between the 3SGE and 3SGTE motors. There are a few minor differences, but nothing that hinders the 3SGE's performance.
