some advice on gettin a celica - 6G Celicas Forums

here is the situation, i found this 95 red celica with 164k selling for $3900

what im thinkin right now is i only have 3k to spend...and im leaning more toward the nissan 240sx
and 164k is somewhat lil high to me

i want the 240sx for its RWD
i dont need a super fast car, just a hatch i can get around places and have some fun with it

good thing about the car is that, the seller is like super close to me, i might go n check the car out later on, mayb next week or w/e, i just saw the ad 2day, so yeah...

tell me why should i get the 6gc over the 240sx

because its a toyota, ull spend more time on the road with it, then u will in the garage fixing it. 164xxx miles...its just getting broken in, if u look enough thers some people on this site with over 200k on there car, and there still going with no problems.

I have a thread in here because I'm looking at a 94 celica...and I've been researching a few sites and user reviews of this car. Overall, devil is right, a lot of people take these things over 200k without major issues (just maybe clutch replacement). Also, yes, it is a toyota and toyotas are damn near impossible to wear out as long as you maintain them right.

I'm going to pay perhaps more than 5,000 on this 94, if other people start bidding, because it's just too good to let get away. If you know the guy and can work out a deal, I would say fight for this car as hard as you can...and I don't even own one yet!

ps: the two big problems I read consistently are that there isn't much room in the car for people over 6 ft, and that there isn't enough power for racing unless you do an engine swap. Good luck!

Dont I know you from somewhere ?? weird...anyways if you just want a nice looking hatch to drive around and want reliability...then go with the 6GC...well you didn't want a super fast car right ?? lol I agree with you RWD is funner to drive but I hope you know how to fix those things too...the celi is easier I think to fix...aslo could be strong too !!! If you know what your doing but its slow as hell stock..the GT too kindasad.gif but its fun to drive plus its a car you don't see on the road much.... smile.gif oh and I think the 6GC looks better too... tongue.gif the 240sx is getting too old skool for me... smile.gif

i've owned two celicas, a coupe and now a hatch. there's a reason i got another one: they're fantastic cars. my old one hit nearly 190k before it was totalled (not my fault), and wasn't showing any signs of slowing down.

mzz is right about power on the motors, but i'd take bulletproof over quicker any day. he's also right about the backseat being pretty much a joke for any passengers older than 6 and the headroom.

from experience:
-starts every time
-never any annoying hvac or electrical issues (my other cars have had 'em, and they're the worst)
-parts are not cheap, but they're very reasonable considering how infrequently they're needed
-really easy to work on--layout and assembly is simple and effective
-looks great--i still have people think my 95 is much newer than it is
-fun to drive without being ridiculous, still gets 26-27 daily mpg (city/hwy combined)
-makes a helluva g-stock autocrosser because of nearly perfect weight distribution and smart susp/brake combo (that's if you choose to get a little rambunctious)

3900 is a little high for the celica, but don't let the miles worry you. as long as it's been maintained occasionally, it will last forever (as compared to say, a vw, which will last forever if you're meticulous and spend lots of $$ on it)

i'd go for the celica. i mean, i did.

my family has been more of a toyota family, lol
currently my dad has a Prius, and he is considering gettin a new car for my mom, Scion tC
i know the good ol reliabilty of toyotas

but as said b4, engine is pretty weak...prob i should do lil research on addin I/H/E, those simple bolt on stuff, see how much it gains

and now my biggest concern is about the price, like i said b4, 3000 to spend...duno if the owner will even look at that, i mean, so far, all the ads i saw, i havnt seen any 6gc for sell around 3k, unless its either damaged, not running, or salvage title
and i hope the insurance is not gonna b crazy for a 17 y.o like me

i'll call the person 2molo, i dont know why the autotrader's email thing NEVER works for me, i emailed a few ppl never got response...

now time for more research into the 6GC!! lol

which yr of 240sx? i have both and RWD is definitely alot more fun.

I hate to say it but I am 6'4" 300 pounds and i fit very nicely in my 94 gt coupe just fine...
and yeah it's not the balls out fastest car i've owned it is the most fun to drive on windy roads.

I hate to say it but I am 6'4" 300 pounds and i fit very nicely in my 94 gt coupe just fine...
and yeah it's not the balls out fastest car i've owned it is the most fun to drive on windy roads.


haha mine is the balls out fastest car ive owned but i had a civic and a corolla
im 6'2" and i fit decently but the head room is lacking because of the sunroof
im 5'10, so its not really a big problem for me..hehe
its gonna be hard to find a clean S13 nowadays.

Yeah, I'm only 5'4"...so the space problem isn't going to be a problem, lol.

The guy I'm buying it from seemed pretty tall as well, though I'll admit I was paying more attention to the car than him. His girlfriend/wife was there and said that they had gotten to some pretty high speeds before...but then again, this is a GT...

Maybe only certain people had the headroom trouble, I remember hearing that the sunroof does cause some problems for taller drivers. There is still most definitely not enough room in the backseat for anyone who's gone through puberty, though...that's going to be a slight downside for me because I'm always giving rides to people at my college...it's just to far damn a walk uphill in the blistering sun for me to just drive past people, I have a soft heart tongue.gif But, hey, I guess cramming into my tiny backseat will be better than walking, right?

6gc vs s13 hatch..
gonna call the seller later 2day, hehe, if the price is firm, im outta luck
dont get an s13, the celi is a much better car in terms of quality.
the looks are definately worth it as well as the handling abilities considering its fwd.
Ive never been in the back seat before, but one of my buddies off the football team is like 6'2" and sumthin close to 270 lbs (o-line) and he seems to fit ok...mind you he's a bit hunched over...tongue.gif

your 270 pound, 6 foot 2 inch friend can actually fit in the rear of the celica? without laying down and folding himself in half?

im 5 foot 8 inches and about 140 and my head hits the roof barely.
Both good cars. Despite what people are saying I find that all the 240SX's I've ever encountered are pretty solid rides. The only thing is the obvious details that can be okay with maintenance (seals, gaskets and easy stuff). But the same goes for the Celica. Great looks and Toyota reliability. A blast to drive. Good autox and roadcourse potential and great all around potential if you decide to give it a motor swap. But the same goes for the 240SX. I believe that if you are looking for a good daily driver, the Celica is the way to go. Performance can be had down the road. But if you have performance in mind at the start of buying your car, I would lean to the 240SX. An already RWD platform, with plenty of aftermarket goodies. And SR20DET's can be had for cheap.

If you're worried about rear headroom for people over 6' then you're talking about the wrong class of cars completely. Get a midsized sedan. Neither a Celica or 240SX will be good. People over 6' will have trouble even getting into these cars. If I had a friend that tall, I'd just let him sit up front. Buy the car that you want, not what type of passengers you'll be carrying.

P.S. I have a coupe for sale with less miles than the car you're talking about and coupes have more rear headroom than hatches.

yea if you really want performance you can also swap in RB25/26.

thats wat im thinkin along the line about the s13, b/c SR swap is so cheap even if the engine dies out, not too much of a problem, but wont be doing that just yet, due to the smog thing in CA
i drove one of the s13 hatch once, the ride is pretty um, dont know the word, but like u can almost feel all the bump, but im okay with that, funny thing is that car has a "turbo" sticker on the hatch but it have the stock KA24DE engine, lol

havnt driven a celica yet, waiting for that to happen, busy weekend, so most likely postpone the test drive to next week, that is if i can find the seller, lol

i want a car that gets me around places with some fun factor, thats y i think the RWD platform might be good choice

S13 are way overpriced, and i dont think i can find a 6gc for 3000 with lower mileage and clean title
still havnt make up my mind yet...
I have three celi's and my best friend has a 240sx (well had until it was stolen)

His 240 had atleast 12 owners and 170k miles. other than neglegance repairs from the previous owner his car was in good shape (mechaniclaly)

He pounded on it pretty hard and he had a blast with the RWD.

I drove it a few times and with my 3s swap underway i much prefer the celi. It handles so much nicer in turns and such, (of course the RWD was fun)

they are both definatly cars i wouldn't mind having, but at the moment i love my celi.

the 240 is definatly faster stock, than my GT but i fixed that problem smile.gif
man, i think that celica im lookin at is gone..
i guess the car is sold, but owner never took if off autotrader, lol
i doubt its possible for me to find a 6gc for 3k...

might just go buy a civic instead hahahah

I JUST GOT A 98 CELICA, MY DAD BOUGHT ME NOT TOO LONG AGO, AND ID SAY GO WITH THE CELICA, I LOVE MINE, ITS FUN TO DRIVE LOOKS GOOD AND HAS NICE HANDLING.

300zx

wat else is there? (japanese ones)
