My 3s-gte Thread - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #39575 47 posts Started by 95celgt
Hey every one, this is my thread dedicated to the 3sgte in my car.
Im making one thread for all the projects that will be done to the motor itself.

Info: Since I bought the car from Chanh55, I was wondering why it was not performing as it should, I did various tune-ups, only making marginal difference.

The biggest project I did up to this point on this motor was when i took out the piping and FMIC to clean it out(this made a huge difference BTW). I addressed this due to massive blow-by coming out of the valve cover PCV pipe. clean up project

Well after that, I decided to check compression and the numbers were as follows: 180:170:95:180
As you can tell my #3 cylinder is gone for some reason....so the tear down began:

Stage 1:
Bolt on accesories taken off(TB,ALT, FMIC stuff, etc.) as well as harness plugs.

radiator out
IPB Image
turbo and manifold out (this was probably the hardest step lol)

Head off:I had to go to pep boys to get the t-55 hex bit for the wierd toyota head bolts.

just for future refrence, the toyota 3sgte head bolts are triple square 12mm sockets.
the tool looks like this:

good job so far!

A+ work bro....the way it looks i'm thinking a ringland is gone bye bye
Well, i'm a bit relieved to find out the exaust valves on cylinder 3 had a bad seat, which may have been the cause of the low compression. So I have taken the head to the machine shop for a valve job, the head itself is pretty perfect, showing no signs of warp. I ordered a complete head gasket set as well. lets hope when i put it back together it runs like the demon it should be:).

BTW: The car always never hit over 6 psi, the acuator was capped off when i got it so i reconnected it to the vsv but no dice... should i get another?

Any mods i can do to the TVIS for gains? what would happen if i removed the butterfly's?

this is cylinder 3, does it look like its in good shape?

take some nice high-res shots of the cylinder walls, and look at them on your puter...thats how i found this:
IPB Image
if you can feel them with your finger nail, the wall is toast from what ive read.

keep up the good work.

Awesome thread man. Sorry about your motor, keep us updated !!!!!

I will return one day.
I just took a bunch of pics of the walls and didnot see anything, i felt around the walls and they feel really smooth.

I just dont know if I should continue into rebuilding the bottom end.
I dont want to slap on the fresh head and then have to tear it apart all over again, so im wondering if I should just do it while everything is out "just in case".

notice the fully labeled harness rolleyes.gif

If the ringlands were blown, wouldn't the car smoke a bit?
When i run the car, it NEVER smokes, even past 6K rpm.
Wow good work man. Did you ever get the speedo to work?
im doing that as well, since theres more room with out the head in there:) i bet you knew this would happen all along lol.
well i could have sworn i used 10mm socket for the head bolts??? but uhm yeah you should look into the ringland problem 3sgte's are known for this thus being the reason for my rebuild but luckily my block is GREAT!!! because i took it to the machine shop for a quote and cleanin and pics will be up soon,.........highly recommend changing water pump and oil pump timing belt etc while you at it that is and well get it balanced, apr head studs and well build a MONSTER!!@! muahahahah
Yup, decided to do the whole thing today, im taking out the rest of the block tommorow.

Stopped by the shop today, saw the head all cleaned up.

Told them i'll be back by the end of the week to deliver the block.
Im gonna use king bearings, new pistons, rings, rods, they are gonna polish and balance the crank, the whole 9 yards.

if your rods are in good shape might i suggest having them shot peened as a method of spending wisely...stock rods are good for about 400whp

but wat components are you planing to run (ie brand, size)
looks to me like the piston in the last picture is chipped in the left corner, right near the valve releif... good thing your gona go the bottom end!
Hey guys, I havent updated as I have been really busy both with this project AND the 4agze swap for the AE86, i had delivered the block, they tore it apart by the next day, showed me the broken #3 piston, and honed block.

The head has a sweet 3 angle valve job biggrin.gif

I had them bore the cylinders 20-over, order all the parts, except the oil pump, i ordered that myself and saved a 100 bucks or so. new bearings, bigger pistons, rings, etc...I truly regret not taking my camara for pics.
I only took one of the short block with my RAZR mad.gif

I should get the entire long block back soon smile.gif

very nice..glad your project is coming along well smile.gif
Hehe, thanks playr.

Some FYI for the readers....

Take the crank pulley/harmonic balancer off the motor BEFORE you start tearing apart the block, UNLESS you pave power tools like the impact gun. This way you can take off the timing cover, these two things deprived me of the clearance for the bellhousing to clear the clutch pressure plate, so i spent hours trying to squeeze the block down under the car, so that i could place it in a verticle position to take it out. It was the only way i could get it out with the tranny still in there.

Over all it was pretty simple, but just time consuming. I have the dash peices dissasembled as im STILL trying to get the speedo to work.

I was also gonna take this oppertunity to stick the a/c condensor and hard lines back in, but once i was aware that the wiring had to be modified for that as well, I kind of gave up on that hope....this decision may lead me to having to look for another car due to the constant 100+ degree temps here(even in the evening), but more on that later.

the wiring is very easy. i posted up a whole how-to on it.

well then....I MIGHT just keep the car;)
nice work man, your doing all that im going to be doing next year.

94' ST Coupe - 5sfe Motor swap and brake swap.
thanks, I wish you luck, its alot of time consuming work, but its not as hard as it seems, and you learn alot from it, as long as you take your time to do it right:)
SO....i didn't have time to update, so here's what happened.

went back a few weeks later, had a really hard time sourcing a few parts for this motor, since everything was gonna be brand new....here's the long block assembled:
IPB Image

then a few days later we brought the motor home upon completion:
IPB Image

My turbo and manifold(this will do the job for now wink.gif )
IPB Image

The ACT stage 2 re-installed(the disk was still in great shape)(the flywheel had also been resurfaced/machined)
IPB Image

Tranny all cleaned and de-greased(even the cake-build up on the bellhousing)
The axle seal was also replaced with a new one.

^ WOW! Sweet man... I'm not sure how I should feel right now...
just georgous, ahhh i want it...take off that fram filter and get a k&n filter
looks like your making good progress with it. good luck man.

Now, for part 2:

After a few hours of squirming and re-adjustment of the input shaft we got the tranny bolted up:

Now it was ready to be held in the engine bay(noticed how daylight dissapeared as soon as I took a hour lunch break laugh.gif ):

IPB Image

Once it was "sitting" in there, I proceeded to install the intake manifold, water pump hardlines various hoses, etc...
IPB Image

This is me on probably the end of the 2nd day working nonstop on the car, putting in that darn cold-start injector..(Laborday weekend!)...
In major need of a hair cut, food, and sleep!!

Turbo on after a couple of hours putting in new hoses and all:

I am impressed.

Very impressed. You're pretty knowledgeable for how young you are.
Indeed the block was in great shape, the head also had no warpage AT ALL, the smallest guage shim didnt fit through the cylinders. After the honing, I was impressed how the walls were, but I went ahead and did a 20 over-bore, and a 3 angle valve job as well.
