Light weight hood 4 cheap? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #39993 12 posts Started by soulshadow
I was wondering since they don't make any fiberglass hoods for our cars and C/F costs an arm and a leg. Could it be possible to cut a giant hole in our current stock hoods and then slowly Bondo the giant hole?

What I mean is we cut a square hole inside the hood and then using overlays and other lightweight fabric slowly work our way to the middle to finish it off and then paint?

Or is it just better to go C/F?

the problem with that would be trying to get it smoothed off, because a hood shows everything, that would be ALOT of work.

Cuz Thats How Us Country Boyz RollGrowing up racing motocross, i learned one thing..."Always wear clean underwear, you never know when the Paramedics are gonna have to cut your pants off of you"
They do make fiberglass hood for our cars, but I've only seen them available in Japan.

the lightest hood ive seen for our cars is the GT-4 hood...it prolly weighs ~10lbs...where the stocker is prolly ~30..

WOW bondo the hole shut? if you close the hood it will crack..bondo is not meant to be used for that type of thing

Coming in 2010full paintjob - new wheels - modified body - new interior - engine build- marriage
GT-4 Hood 10lbs????

More like 10kgs, even a bit more then that. (with insulation/vents/scoops)

JDM Powerplant installed, BPU coming very soon!
i have worked w/ a lot of bondo , it would def. crack. it is not made to have tension on it.......i just bought a cf hood for my car off of ebay. and it cost me 440 bucks......so yea they are expensive.....but if u interested ebay is ur best bet.
aint cheap but you get what you pay for varis hood one of these days ill win the lotto... one of these days

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.
yeah, my gt4 hood weighs about 20 lbs.. but i'm sure when it gets fitted on the car, it'll feel like its 10 lbs.

it would be way easier to use your hood as a plug to make a mold

1. polish n wax the hood, using a special compound
2, glassfiber the hood
3, seperate the hood from the mold
4, as 1, but the mold
5, glassfiber or cf or whatver in the mold
6, seperate them and woila!

as easy as 1,2,3 biggrin.gif

how to make a mold
Perhaps its easier to use something else, or get a CF hood to save time and the headaches, but I really don't want to lose my left leg now.
#1) your statements aren't even thought through...

bondo...and LTW...are two words that should never come in contact in the same sentance...bondo is heavy..and you don't make a hood using bondo

#2) go on ebay bid on a CF hood for 200$

#3) the CF hoods you see for the celica are fiberglass cores with 1 layer of CF wrapping it for visual appeal
