I'm in the middle of changing out both front axles on my 97GT... the passenger side front is as far as we got tonight - when we took the old axle out there is this little thing called the center bearing bracket you have to take out w/ the axle... my question is- HOW DO YOU GET IT OFF THE OLD AXLE AND ONTO THE NEW ONE!? frown.gif

Here's the old passenger's side front

I had that same problem, I was going to replace the axel but the replacement that came didnt have that so i didnt end up buying it. And bought a bootkit to replace the broken inner boot instead.

Hrm upon looking at the pic closer it seems you are missing the rings that keep the boot on the axel or they got rusty real bad

so where can i buy a new center bearing bracket to put on the new axle? and how do i get it put on? btw the rings that held the inner boot on were still there - just broken at where they sealed 2 the axle and the boot had slid back - the broken ring part just wasnt included in the picture. Anyways - any suggestions... i need to have this thing driving again before the weekend's over frown.gif

and hitchachi - the new axles were bought rebuilt from NAPA ... but that piece wasn't on the right axle- should i take it back to NAPA and get them to order a new one??
I had to put a new driver's side axle in mine the week before last.

...my god what a nightmare...be prepared to alot of tugging, pulling, cussing, and kicking.

You should be able to remove that bracket. Put itll take time and effort.
Penetrating oil, and force preferably equal on both sides. I believe there is a bearing on that bracket so be careful. If my axel wasnt already back on the car Id take closer look at it for any clues as to how to take it off.

Best bet, call your local toyota dealer. I think that even thier replacement axels dont come with it. Basically its a way to make more money for the labor charge.

Mine really likes me ive dropped around 1k on parts in two weeks and im gonna end up spending more frown.gif.
remember to replace theaxel seal on the transmission... Its like 8 bucks for a new one. might as well replace it now while your in there.
on the driver's side axle... are there any bolts to be taken out - or just prying the thing outta the tranny?
Any suggestions or techniques on prying the drivers side axle out? we're having a little trouble frown.gif
drivers side is a more of a bitch
my sugg. is to use a long screw driver, and come from an angle from under the car point out toward the fender, there should be sets of 2 risen bars on the shaft, put ur screw driver in between there and use a hammer to knock it loose, it takes a good whack at it, and its easier if you use like a long cold chizel, good luck.

The center bearing thingy is really not needed. You can go without it, but it just adds an extra saftey measure in case the axel comes off the hub or tranny which rarely, rarely ever happens unless its completly cracked or torned from the boot.
good ideas guys.... we finally got those axels replaced - found a good point of leverage for the crowbar once we took off the 2 bolt dust shield that was over the drivers axle smile.gif ... car drives like new now biggrin.gif
