18's or 17's? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #40976 19 posts Started by jcbass7
I know this has been covered a million times, but i though it wouldn't hurt to get some opinions for my car. I desperately need new tires so i want to get rims at the same time. I will be putting them on a 94 hatch with a recent 3sgte swap.

I had 17's and i liked them, but the tires that were on them were tiny and it made it look weird since there was still a huge fender gap etc.

I have always loved 18's but i also don't want to be driving on rims and no tire...

so my question is out of this style rim,

VSW Vortex

what do you recommend for size and tire size to go on them?

I'd love the 18x8 or maybe 18x9?

thanks everyone
I checked it out and the site reccomends 8" wide with a 215/35R18 tire. I'd say trust the pro's
those are nice...i say get the 18s and a 40 sidewall tire..i think thats wat it is..i have 18s with a 35 sidewall i think it to thin like im ridding on rubber bands but ther are nice..i ave kumo ecstas just look in my profile for pics

Myspace Me
i would def not go any smaller than a 40 sidewall.. i had 35's and bent a rim pretty badly cuz one pothole at a decent speed and good by rim...

I`ve also run an 18 rim with 35 and 40 profile tyres...found the 40`s gave a much more comfortable and quieter ride, but the 35`s were great for chucking the car around corners as they had virtually no sidewall flex....Pro`s and cons to both.
17x8 rims. 35 offset
225-45-17 tires

that will give you great grip, ride quality and fill in any wheel gap you might have.

so would my only loss by moving to the 18's with a 40 sidewall be comfort? or will it actually be better to ride on the 17's with the 45 sidewall? (^somewhat aimed at Art's post)
im with lagos... go with 17's
if u go with the size i posted, you will have near stock ride quality, while filling in the wheel gap very well and giving the car a nice stance.

18s can look really good on our cars too, but you a limited to using a smaller tire size. this can lead to horrible ride quality and possibly rim damage when you hit a small pot hole. not to mention, 18s will slow your car down a good amount.

I'd definitely go with 17" with a 45-series tire as well for the reasons listed above - lighter, better ride quality, more rim protection, cheaper.

Keep in mind though, that your speedometer will be off with a larger tire. With 215/45/17 tires on my Celica, my speedometer is off by approximately 8%. It's a minor thing and well worth it for having better ride quality.

New Toyota project coming soon...

X2
i have that tire size on a 17x7" rim, and i couldnt be happier with the combination of handling and road comfort.
you seen what the rim and tire size combo looks like on my car wink.gif
the speedo is off by ~3mph..IMO well worth it for the feel & look of the larger tire VS the smaller sizes.

JDM guy made me do it.
I've got 18s on mine, and my car has not been slower.
It depends on what wheels you go with I guess.
My 18s are probably the same weight as stock or lighter.
