18'.........slow me down....?what?? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #40984 27 posts Started by KB-2
so im going to get 18' rims for my celi, and i told on of my friends...he has a acura integra, and he thinks its godly. anyway he was telling me that 18's are gonna make my car really slow and that i wont get good handling.......somehow i think hes wrong, it might slow me down a tad.....but i dont think that much.....any thoughts??

I got 18" rims on. When I first had it, my car felt heavier for some reason. Maybe becuz my new wheels weighed more than the stock 14" wheels. BUT then I notice as I raced, my car pulled more as if it had more traction? I don't know but I definately had way better handling and that's on stock suspension.

So yeah, I'm saying your friend is totally wrong.

ya...thats what i was thinkin....more traction and handling.....im not really racing my celi around, i know its not to fast, and thats okay.....i jsut want to make it look sweet. but the way he said it amde it seem like i wont be able to move.....so i just dont want it to be like a slug

Man... sometimes friends that have a different car tell you things and seems like advice but it really isn't. They just don't want you to be better than them. Trust me, I have a bunch of Honda freaks as friends. LoL. But yeah, if you are going for looks, it's a definate. If you going low profile tires, be careful with ditchs and bumps. My rims are already bent from gay Orlando city roads.
ya...tahts kinda what i figured. he sees my car has potential, and is jealous...lol
ya id get the lo-pro's but i dont wnat ot get them to little. most of the roads i drive usually dont ahve much bumps nad what not, but im still gonna take anytype of bump i encounter nice and slowww, and i think i might get some teins s-techs....but ima wait and see how it looks w/ jsut hte rims. but i hear the s-techs make it look 200 X better

if you're going for performance, bigger wheels impact the speed, and handling, of any car.

it's heavier, which means it takes more energy to spin the tire.
it's not easy on your stock suspension, either.

at the MOST i'd go for 17" and make sure you got some sidewalls, not just rubber bands.

The springs will probably help with the recoil when hitting bumps and ditches. But they are very bumpy. So best be careful if you hit a big bump esp if you have a body kit on. But I guess you won't have to worry about that. Yeah, definately go for the TEIN S-Tech Lowering Springs for looks. Coilovers are very stiff and have bad recoil but they are height adjustable.

no, you're just feeling the wider tire on the straights.

in corners, you're just abusing the hell out of your suspension. on bumpy roads, your shocks have more unsprung weight to damper, and general braking / acceleration times are increased. it throws off your speedometer, and makes your car a bit slower.

the only thing 18" wheels do for a celica is look cool, other than that, the cons outweigh the pros. with a big enough tire on a 17" wheel you wouldn't notice the difference between them and 18" wheels, at all.

it would be decent if you did suspension work as well. if you're looking for performance, it will do nothing but negatively affect your car.

it looks good but it just isn't really a sound setup, particularly because people wind up using rubber bands for tires on them. you're basically running down the road on metal with a 1" thick strip of rubber as a contact patch. it's a rough ride.
i have 18x7.5 and they only thing i notice is that it take a hell of alot more gas to bark the tires...there is more of a contact patch..so i think they are ok..i got the rubber band on my car now 35 sidewall there a bit thin... but if you get the 18s them i recomend a 40 side wall..
and they are a bit heavy at 25 puounds a peice but the wheels i got weret the same weight for 17s and the 18s. lok in my profile for comparison on stack suspension.

personally, on a celica, i would only do a 16 or 17 inch rim. never an 18.

Teh Celica sleeps for Winter '06. Suspension overhaul begins........
i love everything about my 18s i do wish however that i got a 40 profile tire instead of 35

it just takes some getting used to

i've had 17s and 18s you really don't notice a difference between the two and 18s a perfect imo...they handle great i ran 225/35/18s...and also had coilovers to back them up...handling between my 18s and my 14s/15s wasn't really a change at all the 18s did roll like the 14s/15s due to them having larger sidewalls and imo the 18s stuck better
^^^^yep but i wish i would have got a 40 sidwall..the 18 fit nice under our car...plus you sayed your not racing the car so you dont need a super light weigt 16 inch racing wheel.. its your ride get what you want..18s are hot 17s arnt bad either i havd both and i like the 18 uch more..after a while my 17s started to look small..but hey my 18s look kind of small with my 35 sidwall tires

i have 18 and it slowed the hell out of it i cant spin the tire hardy imo i like them lol they look good on the car
My brother used to beat me with his mr2 on 14s till we got him 18s it really slowed him down and now i can spank him biggrin.gif but he beats me in the long run cuz i dont have 5th gear frown.gif

Bigger rims and wider tires will also hurt acceleration aerodynamically.

lol your worried about the extra 1" wide hurting aerodynamics...thats funny

i'd be more worried about your license plate rofl

c'mon! lol
Hey its true, also air going inside the bigger wheels, unless your rims have a smooth face.

I had a '92 3000GT SL auto, went from 225/55/16 to 255/35/19 and it became a 16 second car with the 19s on it. frown.gif

your honestly nit picking one of the smallest areas of aerodynamics with the celica...your headlights are basically scoops too..those horribly mess with airflow, how bout your side mirrors?
those are all aerodynamic restrictions...honestly when was the last time you saw someone complain about wheel aerodynamics that drove a celica?!
No, not nitpicking, just adding to the reasons why bigger rims will make your car slower...

alright guys. relax. so im thinkin, that since i dont give two ****s about how fast my car is, im thinkin ima go w/ the 18's cause im not taking it to the track, i dont care if that guy in the honda can beat me. good for him, he can go be gay somewere else. i really liek the way the 18's look on the celi' and it sounds like i will be getting better handling...so i guess thats also a plus.

k so now lets take a vote:
who thinks i shoudl get some?
and who thinks i shouldnt?

^ +1

i agree.

and kb-2, i think you should get whatever you want. we're just here to tell you both sides of the story. just don't get chrome rims, they look ghetto on a 6gc.

I have 18's with S-techs and i love the way they ride. Don't think they slowed me down any. My rims are about the same weight of my stockies. And handle really good. I think if you go 18's and how people say they slowed them down and stuff. It depends on what kind of rim you get, and how heavy they are. Thats why i picked out a rim that is light and as light as my stockies. So it didn't make that sort of difference in weight.
