Well i need to buy some new tires and i can't decide btwn the 40series and the 45 series. The guy at the shop told me he won't sell me 45 series cuz my car's recommened size is w/ the 40.

I've had 45 and i like em, hows do the 40's compare in ride and performance. the dude told me that the 40 is a wider tire due to the smaller sidewall. T or F???

Since were on the subject...anyone ever try Kumho Ecsta SPT's before. I've read some good reviews on em. i might get those instead of the usual toyo proxes fz4.

its not any wider, its just a shorter sidewall.

185(width in milmeters)/65(ratio of the width of the tread to the height of the sidewall, 65% the height of 185 is the height of the sidewall of this tire)R14(wheel diameter measured from beed seat to beed seat)

i have 225-45-17 on mine. huge upgrade from my old tire was 205-40-17.

Actually I like the 40's better than the 45's. While cornering the 40's have a wider base so that they corner a little better and allow more grip than than the 45's. However the 40's suffer from a shock absorbtion issue such as when you go over bumps and cracks even pebbles you pretty much feel everything the tires feel. The 45's on the other hand have a bigger height so they abosrb more of the shock and you would feel less at the wheels.

If you like cornering get the 40's, if you like comfort driving get 45's.

Im not sure what you guys have for tires, but The ones I had for a 40 was wider than the one for a 45.

The second number in a tire's size doesn't specify anything about width. It specifies sidewall height.

So given two of the same type of tire, there will be no difference in width between say, a 215/40/17 and 215/45/17 tire.

id go w/ 45's

40's do feel rough, take it from me. I had 45's before, much better. 40's do look good if dropped low enough. Coomer has some good info up there. You'd only see a difference between series in terms of a taller side wall. Even if you have the same series, the first number will also determine the height of the side wall because it is in ratio to.

id go with 45's... if 40's are a rougher ride, which they are... i would deff not go down to 40

I just got a set of Kumho Ecsta SPTs 225/45/17 for my Celi - got about 1000 miles on 'em so far. I like them a lot! Handle well in the wet and dry, nice braking. Have no idea how long they'll last, though. I've never had 40s on my Celi, but I've ridden on them in other cas. To me, the 45s give nice cornering and road feel, but they don't beat the crap out of you like the 40s.
Also, a great value for the money - they're not terribly expensive compared to some other tires.

Will 225's fit on a 17x7 rim? Can you see a big difference between 40 and 45 series on a Tein dropped celica? anyone got 50's??

225's will fit on a 7" wheel.

I noticed a big difference between having 205/40s and 215/45s. I like the 45's much better

im looking to buy some new rims, cause my 16's with my car lowered and a now new body kit on is a little low (many speed bumps are higher than i am), i know i can go 17, but i was kinda thinking of going 225/45/18 is that to big? does anyone have pics of tires that big?

i basically want to gain that extra inch of clearance to the ground by having a bigger wheel and fill the gap in the wheel well.

any suggestions?

PERSONALLY speaking... no bigger than 215/45 on a 17x7 or 7.5 wheel... 225/40 or 45 on a 17x8. 215/40 on a 17x7 is OK also...
