Shims - are they effective? - 6G Celicas Forums

On my brake pads - the stock shims are missing. Pads are brand new.
The brakes make clacking and screeching noises (interminently),
othrerwise work ok. Should I get the missing shims installed?
Do they make a difference (with brake grease added)?
