Buying a turbo - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #43089 13 posts Started by elvasoshexai
um.. i just had a question...

so if u're collecting parts for a diy turbo kit.. but you don't have everything to put it together yet... how do you test a used turbo to make sure it's in good shape and runs?

like.. u can check for shaft play... but not sure what else....

just that some people have like a startup warranty or a 30-90day warranty...

or there's just really no way? since i somehow doubt any shop has the resources lying around to just bolt it up and fire it up for a test run

The question is...If you're buying a DIY turbo kit..Why would you buy a used turbo? Splurge my friend.
BTW - Im told some shaft play is normal and my turbo only has like 3K miles on it and it does have some.
as long as the turbine doesnt touch the housing your good
since its used it might be a good idea to get it rebuilt anyway

That is rebuilt. We used it for no more than 3K miles on my friends MR2T until his new turbo came in. That's it.

Rebuilt is always a good idea. I purchased a used turbo that was supposedly recently rebuilt . Took it to a shop to check it out prior to installing. Turns out it needed a whole new housing due to cracks on the inside.

At least if it is rebuilt, you have a warranty and guarantee that it will work.
your best bet is to start with a known when it comes to the turbo.
buy a good core, and have it rebuilt by a reputable shop.

I did.
Pressure2 - do you think the 3K miles on a good running MR2T would have hurt my turbo to the point where I should have it rebuilt again? I trust your word above all other but damn another$500 to get it rebuilt again? I was just trying to help a friend - do you think I f*cked myself in the end?

how easy are the turbine and compressor wheels supposed to spin? so smooth that one spin with ur finger it goes like 1+ full turns (like a handheld fan or something?) or it doesn't even go 1 full turn when spun with ur finger but when you turn it with ur finger still on it, it's goes around smooth?

well, im not to sure. but i think that depends on how heavy the turbine is to build up inertia to keep spinning. also the bearings perform the best when nice and warm, with a steady supply of clean oil lubing them. by turning the turbine slowly and wiggly it a bit you can feel for shaft splay, other than that im clueless on checking a turbo off the engine.

ok... i guess that was kinda stupid wondering if such a heavy wheel spins as easily as a paper thin plasic wheel...

eh.. i hope it's ok... i just bought a ct20b... i didn't notice any shaftplay when wiggling it... and the wheels seemed to spin fine when turning it.

any proper way to store this? it's just in a box in my garage right now... seller said to check and keep the bearings lubed with engine oil?
