I need the transmission experts help - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #43273 19 posts Started by hmongtaejien
Well, 2 days ago while in traffic my car suddenly died on me. It's a 95 ST.

I was going about 30 coming to a stop but didn't because the light turned green. So, I switch it into 3rd gear and then it just died there. Got it towed back to the house and everything. I was wandering if anyone can help or any inputs as to what the problem is?

I know it's not the timing belt and I am thinking that it's the clutch disc. Now, I don't know if they can get loose over time or whatever, but that's my guess right now. Why? Because naturally, if you don't step on the clutch, you can't move into the gears, now I can move into the gears freely without even stepping on the clutch. So that's my main reason I think it's the clutch.

I was wandering if anyone had any similar problems or any inputs as what's wrong?
dude! i jus had teh same problem last monday! my engine jus kept on running, but i can put it in any gear without pressing on the clutch, and i had my clucth replace no more taht 5k ago......i ask around on the other forum that im on and they said it could be teh input shaft, or clutch goin bad(hub giving up) but as of rigth now it could be ne thing, ill let u know when i pull my trans off...........if u fin dout b4 i do let me knwo bro....

Really? Wow. Dang, I need to know what is wrong with it. At first I'm thinking it's the clutch, but I am thinking about ignition stuff now. Let me know.
my guess is, it has nothign to do with teh engine, its prolly the trans.......i still havent had time to check it out, rigth now im tryn to get a car to drive around till i getthis fix....

that happened to me with my 7afe motor. It just stopped moving. When i took the trans off the motor it turnd out that my clutch was shattered into a million pieces! there was almost no sign of the clutch disk, just the metal pieces and springs. But see i knew i need a new clutch way before it happened, i just wanted to wait it out until i had all the 3s parts ready. but it went early. Symptoms of needing a new clutch prior to this was that the gears were REALLY hard to get in, I remember praying at every light that my car would go into gear. rolleyes.gif

Good luck, i hope you figure it out! smile.gif

90% sure it's the clutch.

Those were my initial thoughts also. Has anyone ever replaced the clutch disc themselves? If so, is it hard?
i jus had mine changed about 5k ago, would bad installation cos teh clutch to go bad? cos this happen to my car aswell....

Did the car stop moving as in just stop but motor kept going? Or did the engine die too? Because, it's a motor thing if it died, and it's a clutch/trans thing if it was still running. You can move though the gears freely if the motor is off with no clutch.

Easy test...

Make sure there's nothing in front of you. With the car stopped and off... shift to first gear. Hold the clutch... start the car. If it jumps... there's something wrong with your clutch system.

Or, if after it starts you let off the clutch and it won't move it's a clutch problem. Good thinking on that one though.

It doesn't move when it goes into gear, does it? If not, it's a drivetrain issue. Could be axle, trans, bearing, clutch. Look to see if it's an axle. Other than that, you'll have to open it up.

Yeah, it goes in without even stepping on the clutch at all. The engine doesn't start, what-so-ever. It feels like it's about to turn over, but t doesn't.

Heh... you failed to mention the car no longer cranks. My next best guess would be the starter gear is stuck out... but how it got there while you were driving... I dunno. Second guess... timing belt.

Also, have you checked your oil level? This is rather frustrating. Is there anyone you can take the car to to look at it? If not, we need a detailed description of exactly what happend and exactly what the car is doing now. Man, it's hard to diagnose these things over the internet.

HJAHAA...

If the ENGINE isnt starting/running what is leading anyone to think its the TRANNY???? Check for fuel and spark...check the battery's voltage...starter...timing belt..alternator (and power running to it, my power cable to the alternator broke one time and the car died out while driving).

I think its more or less, hmongtaejien is doing a really bad job of describing his problem. He is leaving out *minor* details like "the engine no longer cranks". It makes it really hard to help him diagnois when things like this happen. Kwanza and Bulldog are trying to help with what they're givin.

Teh Celica sleeps for Winter '06. Suspension overhaul begins........

u can put it into gear without pressing teh clutch if ur engien is off, odds are ur problem has nuttin to do with ur transmission.........jus wondering, how do u knwo its not ur timing belt?
