Half Shaft question?? - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #43395 17 posts Started by Baddica95
Ive had my swap done for a couple of months now(3rd gen 3sgte with 5sfe tranny) and i noticed that the car shimmys real bad when i drive..I figured it was just a alignment problem but when i took it in to get aligned, the guy said thats not the problem. He said the problem is the half shafts. My car is lowered approx. 1.5 inches and i guess that half shalfs are too long or something so he said i need to find some sort of different half shafts...does anyone know what im talkin about or what he is talking about. I would most certainly appreciate it. thanks guys

Ryan

to my knowledge, i think he's full of crap because you are using the stock tranny/axle setup and in theory it nothing changed from the original unless something was not installed properly. same tranny, same block, same axles, should be the same as when you had your 5SFE

i do leave the possibility that I am wrong tho

You don't need different axles. You may need to replace them though - if they are damaged at all.

It may also be motor mounts (check ALL of them) or ball joints.

I've had all of these problems on my Camry at various stages and each one can cause what you are describing.

I replaced both of my axles while doing the swap because the old ones were starting to go...I heard it may also be the motor mounts, but those appear to be good. So its definately not the axles...He estimated that they about about a half an inch too long on each side, so i dunno what to do, im not going to take out the springs, thats for sure..
Motor mounts, out of balance tires if the shaking gets worse at higher speeds, does your brake pedal vibrate when you step on it? Could be warped rotors. How are your tires? Could have a bubble in one of them.
tires could be balanced wrong also. That makes them wiggle while your going a faster speeds. The whole thing about half shafts being to short? I'm gonna have to pull a BS card on that. My dads a mechanic and my cars lowered 1 1/2 inch in front and 1 inch in the back. have no problems with my half shafts.
hmmm my tires seemed to be just ffine when i drove them with my other motor...
can you explain in more detail what the car is doing and exactly when does it happen?

What did you do for your passenger side engine mount?

87 4runner DLX 22re, 5spd, 4.30gr, 4" lift, 30" tires, HID w/ Projectors, 6spkr + sub, custom exhaust, 94 celica leather seats, SR5 gauge cluster and clinometer. Future engine swap... possibly a 2jzge.
Whenever i accelerate at any speed...the car will shake on the front end..most toward the passenger side. Its like a wheel shimmy or something. As far as the mounts go...i just used my GT mounts.. The car that i got the clip from was in an accident on the driver's side but i dont believe the motor shifted or anything.. I just dont know, but you guys are sure its not the half shafts? And thanks for your feeedback..

How did you mount the passenger side of the engine? Did you use the 5sfe bracket on the engine and the GT mount on the body?

Do you hear any weird noises when you turn.. or notice that the vibration goes away or lessens when you are in a turn?

no i dont hear any noise when i turn...and to the best of my knowledge it doesnt shake when i turn...
since it is not speed dependent (meaning when you go 10mph it will shake just as bad as when your going 500 miles an hour), i will have to say its not axel/half shaft/or wheel related.

Its most likely your motor mounts because it only shakes when your accelerating. Probably the rear motor mount when bad.

Check the jack shaft carrier bearing that bolts to the rear of the engine block. Make sure everything is tight and its aligned correctly. Im guessing some of the bolts may have wiggled loose or werent tightened enough.

where is that? Cuz we did find the bracket that holds the passenger side axle straight unbolted.. so we got 3 bolts and held it back on. but then today I felt it again.. frown.gif
