Caliper overhaulin' - 6G Celicas Forums

Anyone went through a caliper overhaulin'? Not necessarely on a celica as they are pretty much the same for all car...



I read its possible to do one without a kit is the rubbers are not damaged..basicly just brushing/lubbing the sliders and the cylinder (if seized)..



any input???

you should get new rubber parts anyways, they dont last forever and theres a good chance you'll puncture the boot when removing it.

ive done it before, what do you want to know specifically?

My main concern is that If I undergo the repair myself and realize I need a new cylinder that it might cost as much to get the cylinder and repair / hardware kit than the whole caliper, which is too expensive both ways really...

But if its not leaking it shouldnt be a problem right? (assuming its still moving)

odds are you wont need a new piston, just put a piece of wood between the piston and the rest of the caliper when you pop it out with air.

as for the cylinder, thats machined into the body of the caliper and if theres some light rust you can remove it with a scouring pad followed by washing it well.

Alright, I'll give it a shot when its warmer outside. The caliper looks good visually(not rust) they just dont work, ah! It should be fun...

Frow what I've seen, it almost always ends up being cheaper and easier to just buy rebuilt calipers if you are having problems. Look for ones with lifetime warranty. If yours aren't leaking or sticking, they shouldn't need to be rebuilt. It is fairly rare to have problems with the pistons/seals.

I would get new calipers, but they are 150$ each plus tax and probably need two, and thats not even with rotors and pads. To do a complete rear brake job could set me back to almost 500$..If I can do it myself I’m always going to try first..I mean my brakes arent working, I can’t **** it up more than they already are laugh.gif

Get rebuilt calipers. You can get them at most auto parts stores, ready to install with new pads and hardware and with lifetime warranty for about $50 per side. If the pads ever wear out, or there is a problem with the calipers, it is usually covered.

If you can show me where to get 50$ calipers be my guest! I cannot find any rebuilt ones for under 140 each!

at least for an ST modle, pepboys and autozone both have them for under $50 after the core charge.

you need to come and buy them up here in Canada. Rebuilt calipers run for ~115 canadian.

www.car-part.com you can find clipers for 50 bucks, it pulls from a nationwide database of salvage yards

car parts seem to be a lot more expensive in Canada. I talked to a toyota dealership in the states and they want $366 canadian for the rear bearing/hub assembly, in canada they want $477.

same part, 30km difference!

Glad to hear you found them. I usually get them from Autozone or Parts America. As you've probably seen the price can vary a lot at different places.


car-part.com is for used parts. I wouldn't recommend using used calipers under any circumstances. You'll be much better off with the rebuilt ones.

those prices are after converting it from USD to CDN. When i asked the dealership why it was more expensive they said: "Toyota canada sets our pricing".
