timing belt track - 6G Celicas Forums

Anyone else notice that the timing belt on the 3S runs right on the edge of the cam gears? (away from engine).

I'm wondering what the hell this is all about and if there is a way to fix it..

87 4runner DLX 22re, 5spd, 4.30gr, 4" lift, 30" tires, HID w/ Projectors, 6spkr + sub, custom exhaust, 94 celica leather seats, SR5 gauge cluster and clinometer. Future engine swap... possibly a 2jzge.
I wouldnt worry about fixing it unless its a problem. If thats how they all are.....thats how it is.
i was looking at mine a few weeks ago. it runs right smack in the middle of the cam gears.

No.. Kelly Springfield.. from Autozone.. I wanted a goodyear gatorback but they didn't have them in stock.

I have all the timing components in place from the belt guide on the crank gear.. new idler pulleys.. new tensioner.. new water pump.. cam gears look in good shape.. i don't get it.

are you missing the washer between the tensioner and the block?

Have you tried to crank the engine over? Maybe its just the way it was assembled and it'll line up once its moved. Or did you take it apart and it was riding off the gear? Why did you initially get into the timing cover????

The washer is between tensioner pulley and block and no it's not missing and if it is missing the belt will ride toward the engine.. I'm going away.

I never put my top belt cover on .. so I could see the belt... And yes I started the engine.. it's always run on the edge of the gears frown.gif

Id try an oem belt next. My personal preference is to always use toyota stuff, especially on a turbo car.
Playing with a friends MR2 the other day just doing general maintenance and I noticed his Timing belt is also running at the dead end of the cam gears. Not sure why but it was actually rubbing a hole on a vacuum line that runs past it. Replaced the vacuum line and secured it away fom the belt and now everything runs good. Is this something we should be worried about?

Look at his belt again.. and tell me if the writing on the belt is facing the engine or other way... I think the belt may be directional... Also his is belt a toyota or if not what brand?

Don't know. The previous owner [also a close friend] had just got it a fresh rebuild at a non-toyota shop so I assume a new timing belt was installed. Probably not factory knowing how rebuilds work. What Identifying marks would tell me?
Eh like I said there is writting on the belts.. part number.. where the belt was made.. **** like that.. so find it on the belt.. Then see the lettering is facing the engine or the bay.
