tranny died - 6G Celicas Forums

Topic #45187 6 posts Started by markie
so i'm making a left out of the parking structure, i hear this loud *thud*, and my car stops moving. i have it in gear but it refuses to move (both sides aren't moving). i have my friends help push the car back into the parking lot, and it sounds horrible (clanking all over the place).

now, i'm not 100% sure but i believe my tranny is dead, but it could also be the axle, or i don't even know.

my question: what should i do? first, i know i have to get it towed to a mechanic. second, if he tells me its my transmission, what are my options? i'm planning on swapping in the near future, possibly summer, with intentions of switching out to the e-153 tranny. should i have my transmission rebuilt, switch to another GT tranny, or swap to the e-153? i'm assuming of course the e-153 bolts right up to the 5sfe.

i have an adequate amount of money to play with, just not enough to do a complete engine swap.

things happen for a reason.
do the e-153. since you're already planning on a swap in the near future, might as well get the tranny off your list.

ss-iii splitters and 404 skirts areon. which means i need to update my sig.
I'd bet it's an axle. 95% of the time that's what breaks. Especially this time of year with the cold and ice out. You hit ice and then get traction and the axle breaks.

having the car towed to a mechanic this afternoon, ill let you guys now how it goes *fingers crossed*

Agreed on the axle theory.
the E-153 cannot work on a 5SFE unless you get a custom disk.

The reason for this is because the 5SFE pressure plate is too small to fit a 3SGTE disk (which is the only thing that fits the splines on the tranny input shaft).

but, i have to agreed, from what you described it does sound like bad axle.
