is it worth the extra ~$1000 for the st205 clip?? i know it has a bit more power, but would it be worth spending the extra? also, does the st185 have the same amt of potential? and one more question for reassurance: the st185 swap write up would b the same for an st205 right? the tranny, mounts shifter cables, etc......the whole swap?

just about everything is the same as far as the swap goes except the wiring is a bit easier... and as far as the difference in price and all, you basically get a newer fresher motor at that... its just all depends on what you have available at the time because in the end, its just about the same

so r u saying they would both run about the same in the 1/4 mile??? i thought the st205 (3rd gen) wo0uld be a lot faster...

....st185 has a water to air top mount intercooler.
the st205 goes back to the inferior air to air top mount.

Unless u plan on shelling out for piping and a nice FMIC, id just go with the st185. The numbers arent great enough to justify the extra $1k.

Talk to Defgeph, Lagos, and even Presure2.

they will give u PROS and CONS for both clips, and u can decided on your own.

and im 95% certain the st205 has a2a aswell.

for only 1,000 bucks more, get the st205. if you cant find an st205 clip, then just go with the st185. either way youll have a quick car.

random question: Would it be worth it to drop in an ST205 3S into an ST185 All-trac? Or should you just swap to the CT20B, up the injectors, and get a FMIC?

if you already have a good st185, then you would be better off just upgrading what you have.

The st205 is MAP isn't it? I just hate messing with those MAF sensors. Seem like the really slow down the tunability. I think that alone would be worth $500.

I would say it depend entirely on your "goal". For a typical swap and if you are planning to keep it relative stock or mild mod (~300 whp on FWD), I'd go with 3rd gen setup. It is easier to bring 3rd gen to that level without adding more stuff. The stock CT20B, W/A IC, 540cc/min injectors, ECU, head, are good enough for that kind of goal.
However, if you are planning to build the engine to support BIG power, high boost, huge turbo, reinforced/stoked bottom end, head, new intake/exhaust manifold, FMIC, there is no reason to spend more on 3rd gen. 2nd gen engine will do the job. The highest HP on 2nd gen stroked block I have seen is about 800 rwhp and 700 awhp on STS185.

By the way, if you can get the 3rd gen for only $1000 more, don't hesitate. All goodies that come with it (IC setup, CT20B, 540cc injectors, MAP sensor, ECU) will worth the extra money you pay.

In your case go with st205, for extra $1000 you get 300-320whp capable turbo, better and MAP based engine managment with fuel cut at 18 psi, better intake manifold, superior head with shim under bucket shims, better camshafts, stronger headgasket, 5mm bigger throttle body, better fuel system (fuel rail and 540 injectors), and aside from some gen3 block casting flaws it still better if you consider stronger rods, pistons, lower compression (maybe not better but safer), also relocated oil filter (easier access), far superior a2w intercooler, and probably few things i forgot. Aftermarket parts for gen3 are harder to come by in usa but alot of maintenance parts can be substituted for gen2 parts and gen3 has more plug and play ems options. That 1000$ can be EASLY made back by selling the turbo, intercooler, and injectors, in case you would upgrade to bigger turbo, fmic and bigger injectors. Also consider emissions, i passed with a stock sw20 gen3 in illinois but whatever place your in might check for egr or something similar.
