those are some good action shots

That 4gc could be GT-S, but it's not a GT-4. It could have the motor and a front mount, but they came stock with the hood scoop, and I see no scoop. Good job on the autoX. I think the Celica makes a great autoX car.

BTW: What happend to all the stuff you had wieghing the car down, Jaws? It's looking good.

Nice pictures. Did you run out there?
Our region starting next sunday. I got my car finally and "legally" ready for STS class and need to defend my 1st place from last season.
By the way. How did you end up last season?

I could have sworn that the 4th gen GT4s (st165) had a a2a top mount intercooler. I had to look it up. Toyota was really ahead of it's time back in the 80's.

No - you are all right. They started out without the hood scoop until they started popping motors under warranty due to heat. A friend of mine had one and Toyota gave him a new hood after some years and he wasn't even the original owner. He never had problems with the motor unlike me who popped [3] 3's in two years on my swapped 4th gen GTS. I on the other hand received no hood because my car started out its life as GTS. Mine was flat black, his was red both hatches. Should have seen us at the meets in like '97-'98. Everybody was like WTF are those?
BTW - I used to own him straight line but man on the corners? The Altrac was mean [even ST-165]. Damn I miss those cars.

What do you mean "Toyota gave him a new hood"? confused.gif
ST165 (or any 4th gen) hood does not have a scoop, ever.
Toyota has never made one with a scoop.
Or are you saying the dealer install an after market scoop on his car? cwm13.gif

I find it weird because a scoop will not help much with heat in the engine bay of ST165.
That car need a "vent" like the ST185RC or ST205.

No I mean scoop. It looked just like the ones the ST-185, ST-215, levins etc got. It was not a aftermarket one and the purpose was to put air on the topmount air-to-air IC.

The 4th gen Celica doesn't have an air-to-air intercooler. It's water-to-air.

Here - to offer evidence - check this out. Read in the 5th gen section it talks about the upgrade from ATA to WTA:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Celica
This is not the only place I have seen this.

His looked like the stock ST-185 one not the CS one. I thought Celicas didn't get them until ST-185 RC. I've seen that on many GT4 sites.

BTW - Check this out:

Not ST-165 though.

That is ST165.
Look at the foglights and the body kit @ 2:57 min.

_Gary
Yeah but check out the conspicous lack of drive axle and rear diff at the very end when the car is upside down. You can also clearly see the exhaust running throught the tranny tunnel just like on our car. The performance sure looks like a GT4 though LOL. I don't remember any 1st gen 3S-GE's being that quick.
Why would they do that to that car? mad.gif

Again,
ST165 = WTA
ST185 = ATA
ST185RC/CS/GroupA Rallye = WTA
ST205 = WTA

_Gary
Where does it say WTA for ST-165? Plus why would they back pedal on technology yet pull more horses out of the end result. I also said this is not the only place I've seen this before.
Did you check out the end of that vid to see the lack of drive axle and rear diff and the exhaust running throught the tranny tunnel?

Sorry, my fault not watching it till the end. You are right, it is NOT an ST165.
But I stand correct, ST165 came with WTA IC.
I bet my life on it. wink.gif
They did not back pedal.
The ST165 stock WTA IC is very small.

_Gary
I belive you as mine was swapped and I've long suspected it was ST-185 engine but this is what my friends looked like and his was ST-165 for sure:
IPB Image
Perhaps someone swapped the IC systems? Doesn't explain the recall though or why my frind got Joe Myer's Toyota to give him a new hood in like '97-98.
That is definitely an ST185 IC, not stock ST165 IC.
If you have a bigger picture of his engine bay, I can tell you which engine he has.
From that picture, it is ST185 IC and ST185 exhaust manifold heat shield.
He might have a 2nd gen engine swap into his ST165.
With that ST185 IC, he definitely needs a scoop.
Is he on alltrac.net?

_Gary
No that car is long since confiscated Im afraid and we lost touch when he went Nissan on me. LOL. That picture was a for instance - thats not actually a shot from his engine bay but that is exactly what his IC looked like.
I thought when the first A2A intercoolers came out they were considered upgrades from the w2a. Because you can only cool air as cool as the engine with the w2a, but you can get it as cool as the outside air with the a2a. At least that's how they talk about them in Desiel truck terms. Maybe the ST185RCs and the ST205 had an upgraded system that ran off a seperate cooler instead of same lines and regular engine coolent. I don't know, I'm just throwing ideas out there.

Live Free, Be Happy
All Celica wta IC systems (ST165, ST185RC/CS, ST205) run separated cooling system.
They have a separated heat exchanger unit on the front.
The drawback of ST165 system is the size of IC core and heat exchanger unit.
Many people with stock ST165 system modify the pump to runs constantly and/or upgrade the heat exchanger to a larger unit.

ST185 ATA IC is not really a better system either.
It is OK on the highway, but very horrible in stop and go traffic due to lack of air flow.
Many ST185 owners put a slim fan on it to help with heat soak.

The really upgrade one is from ST185RC/CS
The ST205 core is even thicker than ST185RC/CS
Also, there is a rare TTE ST185RC unit that has an extra rows of IC core and will support ~300-400 awhp.

im glad he finally signed up! i talked to him at the last auto x i went to back in october, where's the guy with the black celica and the 4 hoosier slicks? biggrin.gif
