Well, long story short, Ive got a problem with my current transmission that can't realistically be fixed without changing it into a new housing, or just getting a new transmission.

What are my options on transmissions? what transmissions are roughly compatible with a more or less stock 99 celica, and what can get me the best bang for the buck, performance wise, in an auto ( if thats even possible ).

If not, what cars have the same tranny's, so i could just get a pull from a car here?

For reference my toyota dealer wants 900 for a used tranny, and 700 to install it, and im aiming to spend quite a bit less than that, if at all possible.

For an auto trans in a 99, those prices are too hateful. Manuals cost less, but the labor putting it in is always what kills. It's really not too hard to do. You'll need a helper, jack stands, a good jack, and a nice set of tools and you can get it done. It'll take awhile. You can go buy a Hanes Manual for the Celica, and it will give you step by step insteructions on how to change one. Any can with a 5sfe, the 2.2 liter Toyota motor, will have the same auto. Unfortunately, that's just Celica's and Camry's. But, there are a lot of Camry's with autos. Make sure you get one from a 96 or newer car, to make sure it wires up okay. I'm not sure if there is a difference in the wiring from OBD1 to OBD2 in the transmission, but it's a better safe than sorry kind of deal. Good luck.

Already have the hanes, so thats one step down. I also have access to a good garage and tools, so theres another major step, and a mechanic to help. woot. Thanks for the advice, ill go searching for a camry to rip apart.

Where's Tyler TX? Houston Toyota Club would be willing to help. We have a garage we use for just that kinda stuff and tranny would be a good thing to do. Bear in mind I haven't done it before but I'm sure we could get it done. We have the tools and I have a partner that is always willing to help. Plus we have tons of members including a Toyota Tech and back up support from a local dealership Why not swap to manual since you have the perfect chance? Or do you prefer manual?
