Its important because you can set a max bid now, but if someone outbids you, you don't have the chance to think of re-bidding. That happened to me with a shift knob. I set my max bid and went to sleep, only to find that someone outbid me in the middle of the night and won. (I still got the knob, but thats a whole other story

I guess what its all about is control. You want control over the auction. You want to be able to sit there (or not sit there) and know that when someone else bids, you'll bid back. eBay will bid up to a number you have set, sniping programs bid to a certain point and when that point is met, it automatically sets a new max bid that you have set.
