my steering wheel shakes/ vibrates when im going 65mph or higher. and ideas on how to fix this?

balance your tires if they are too old probably time to get new ones.

Tires are not balanced....usally it will start after about 45 MPH...

my tires are way off balance they are old so not even worthy to re balance them and I can go to 70 MPH with no vibration after that it gets crazy.

lol...thats how mine kinda are....I have snow tires in the rear 205-55-15

Then In the front left I have a new tire at 205-55-15

And for the front right I havea old tire at 195-50-15


and 3 of them have flat spots.....

mine does that too, i got my tires rebalanced, i think i got another year of thread left....hmmm

also check your P/S belt. I had the same problem b4, got my tired balanced, still was happening. then i blew my head and while it was gettin replaced, they replaced the belt too cuz it was pretty much worn down and it got rid of it completely. Havent had a problem since, well now its shaking, but thats cuz i need to do an alignment.

couldn't it also be that he needs to get his wheels realigned? or would that not cause it to shake like that i really wish i knew more about this kind of stuff

yea if hes out of alignment it will make the wheel shake too.

i too have an annoying shake at moderate to high speeds. funny thing is it's worse on some days than others. if it were balancing it would be there all the time, no? can a bent axle do this? it is just me? more sensitive to it in certain conditions. what about an out of kilter rim? any suggestions ? should i replace the rims or the axles? my tire shop swears they are balanced. and whatever happened to high speed balancing? they just plop the wheel/tire assembly on a really expensive-looking rig and spin it about 50 rpm. the display tells them where to put the weights and voila, 50$ later you are balanced. i miss the days when they asked you to leave the room because they spun the works at breakneck speeds, took out the charts, consulted everyone an staff and THEN YOU WERE BALANCED!! for real real, not for play play.

sorry for the diatribe.. i ment to say yes, check your balance, rims, belts and axles...in that order.

thanks for all the replies everyone. ive been holding out on new tires, and i rotated the front to back about a month ago. the car is new to me so its been a learning experence.

so... check my power steering pump, re-balance wheels.

the car hasnt hit anything, (other than that lazy squirell i clobbered yesterday goin 40) ...like i was saying, the car hasnt hit anything hard to my knowlege. should i check the alignement and axles too?

Steering wheel vibration is usually unbalanced tires/wheels.
Easy way to see is rotate wheels front to back.
If something changes [even just the speed it vibrates at], it's most likely the wheels/tires.

It can be the alignment too.

Or a slipped belt in the tire, but that's usually at low speeds.

If it's intermittent, it's more likely to be a bad ball joint or suspension component.

The machines we have now are MUCH more accurate than the old school way.
I know it doesn't look like much, but for that kind of stuff computers are better than humans.

i have a small amount of vibration in mine, however it cycles. so the vibration will get worse for about 10secs, then get better for 10secs..etc etc

only does it going above 80kmh

i know my tires need replacing, just weird that it cycles like that

This sounds like a loose rim/improperly torque rims, or you have aftermarket rims and not using hubcentric rings.

It also could be your brakes, does it pull a little to one side or any excess brake dust on one wheel?

bent rim?

if it pulls to one side while braking its from a warped rotor

If it pulls to one side it's from a caliper sticking or a rotor with a rougher surface than the other side.
Or better tire grip on that side.
Or a small chance of several other things.

Warped rotors will cause the pedal to pulsate, not make the car pull....

easiest things to check first, is:

tires warped > tires balanced > alignment check
