Does anyone know about any brand other then MAGNAFLOW that makes a catalytic converter for a 5sfe engine?
Cat Converter Help - 6G Celicas Forums
Are you looking for OEM style or better flowing? OBX makes one for our cars but it is hi-flow and won't pass most states emissions tests.
It should pass the sniffer.
It won't pass the technicality test, if they look for it.
By law a replacement cat has to be in the same location as the original.
*And by law a cat can only be replaced if there is something wrong with it.
For the record, I have a Catco high flow cat on my car. *

Just pull the cat off. It'll give you a couple more ponies. There's no emissions test in hawaii is there?
Nope, lol. Although it would be a bit louder without the cat.

I definitely want to avoid the loudness of a muffler. Is it a proven fact that removing the cat converter increases horsepower?
Like 2 maybe.
Unless you are running very high boost.
Why run no cat?
The cat does a good job of cleaning up your exhaust.
And while I'm not caught up in the global warming Al Gore farce, it is nice to reduce some of that stuff.....

my car doesn't have a cat. It's not the loudest car i've heard, but my wifes 95 gt has a cat with an hks muffler and her car is quite a bit quieter than mine.
You can change the tone or pitch of the sound with a resonator. If you want to free up some HP just change the muffler. The cat doesn't restrict flow as much as the stock manifold or muffler unless your car is running rich or burning coolant. Those two can contaminate the catalyst in the converter and plug it.

If you want some real power, modify the head internally. Leave your cat on to do it's job and help us breathe! I hate how people polute our air, just to get 1-2 extra hp and sometimes a annoying noisy car.

Random Technologies makes great high flow cats.
