im sick of mapquest always getting me lost. since the price of gps systems has gone down a fair bit, im thinking of picking one up. any recommendations? im looking for something in the 200$ range. so far i think i like the mio digiwalker c220 the best.

Don't skimp on a gps. The bigger brand names have better software.

I would suggest getting the Tom Tom One. It's of the best intro gps' imo.

from what ive seen, the more expensive ones may have a few extra features, but nothing that i must have for the unit to do its job.

art, i dont know what the range of prices are on those, but my cousin joe got the garmin unit recently, and LOVES it, i borrowed it to drive up to a meet about 45 minutes away, and it worked flawlessly.
i even tried messing with it on the way home, trying to "trick" it, but every time i did, it would just automaticly "reroute" itself, and remap a new way.
good stuff if you do a lot of traveling.

only thing i dont like about the garmin is the size. its a bit bulky compared to the mio that can just fit into your pocket.

I know with most OBII systems they have a data log..my friend got in sh*t cuz he was doing 170km/h in his dads new charger. lol. his dad goes to the dealership to get a trouble code cleared, and the tech was like "uhh..Mr. Back, did you know that you were recorded doing 170KM/H??" He was like "uhh, Ive never been near that speed, i dont know how that could have been..you sure thats true. No one has had my car besides me except...." lol. But yea..OBDIII is gonna b making our jobs even more fun with the ecess wiring.

As for cheap GPS, Garmin is good, i was thinkin of rigging up my PSP to be a GPS system. I have a link saved on my old computer that has a link to a How-To, rig up part of a garmin GPS unit to your PSP so the PSP acts like a full garmin unit. Its like $125 or somethin for the unit you need + the soft wear and hack to convert the PSP's soft wear. But even regular Garmin units are cheap and easy to use. My sis's BF bought one when they were in europe to use. Never got lost, even got trapped in a snow storm and managed to find a way around the bad roads.

garmin is great! i have one of them for the portability, i also got a blackbird (made by alpine) great system, slow unless you hook it up to a screen. i would stick with brand names since they update ALOT more often then other brands(which sometimes dont ever update) garmin has construction built in - aka if a road is closed, lane closed etc due to construction, usually state or large municipality roads, it will tell you whats up AND you can one touch detoure around ANY section of road/roads you may come up on. my advice - go to tweeter let the guy there give you all the info, demp them in store, find one that has a descent amout of points of interest if you dont wanna always have to rely on addresses & intersections, also find one that is FAST for scrolling the map, otherwise your most likely going to get twice as frustrated with the thing. once you found what you like, online that shibby or hit up circuit city (personally i hate cc bcz i got dicked over getting a camera there)

Just one word of advice about whatever brand you get - most of them mount with a suction-cup bracket that loses it's "suck" after a period of time in an alternately hot/cold car. Even the smaller units are heavy enough to put stress on the suction cup mount. I've got a Garmin c330, have had it for about 2 years, and have had to replace the suction cup mount twice. Finally went with a mount that just sits on your dash - sort of like a beanbag with feet.
Other than the mount, I love the Garmin!

i dont know formats btwn what i have and the tom tom, but ive compiled a huge list from the stores, gas stations, malls, food places etc in the north east, your from here too so i got ya covered from ohio to ny down to virginia and a good deal of places around wv, they should have some ones that people uploaded on their site, if not id recommend setting all the points on your computer and xfer them over to your unit, easier than typing all that out on that lil touch screen

ive had a few days to play around with it. here is what i think:

pros:
its small and light.
fits into your pocket.
gets great reception. even picks up the gps signal while im in my house.
very accurate. youll never be lost again.
custom downloadable voices.... now mrT can guide you home.


cons:
suction mounting cup... sucks.
the built in Point Of Interest database is very limited. but that can be fixed by downloading free POI's from the net.
the screen is small, and sometimes a little tricky to type on... but thats what you get with a compact unit like this.

overall im very happy with it. it does its job very well, and becomes even better once you download more poi's into it, and setup all your addresses into it .

not yet... but its just a suction cup mount. i was thinking about mounting it under the radio, but then i wouldnt be able to put it in my other car if i need to.
